My friend and I were going out on a trip on a river by boat. On the second day we ran out of the drinking water we had brought from home. We stopped at a little hut beside the river to beg for water. 'Can I please have some drinking water', I said to man in the hut. 'Sure! Just take how much you want and leave the rest there' he replied. I asked him where I could find the water and he said it was right behind me. I told him that I could not see water behind me. He pointed out to the river and told me that was his drinking water.

Actually I liked the response of "Just take how much you want and leave the rest there".

As a joke I don't find it very funny. It is sad that we 'Westerners' have lost the ability to live with nature... I can understand that the guys answer put you off because he said leave what you can't use, but I still find it sad in a way.

How many people stop and pause to look at the birds on their way to work (how many people actually walk instead of taking the car, where birds are hard to spot). How many people know where milk comes from, how many have actually milked a cow... I am a city slicker, I love life in the city, but I would go crazy if I couldn't see a bird or a tree or some other wonder of nature every once in a while.

What I would like to say though... keep going out there and exploring the world. Perhaps you do love nature and just didn't get the guys purism, naturalism... Then this answer is for those who are not!!

Have a good day!

If you were in a third world country lots of people have to use the neareast river for everything and can't drill clean water wells as they can't afford it. So it may be the truth.

Isn't it a bitter reflection on Our society that that little story is either humorous because it is ludicrous, or banal due to it's philosophical candor?
