My husband and I have been trying to conceive for around five years with no luck and three failed IVF attempts. After the 2nd IVF I began thinking about adoption, and we have been talking about it for around six months. We've decided this is the option we would to go for and i was wondering if there is anyone out there who could give us advice, share your stories etc. We are interested in overseas adoption, but there seems to be a lot of controversy surrounding the idea. Ideally we would like to adopt a baby, but no other preferences. Thank You

I live in the UK. Alot of sites I've found are about US families adopting overseas but there isn't much about people from the UK doing the same thing.

I would suggest that you look into adopt domestically if you are looking for a baby. It is actually easier, faster, and less expensive than a overseas adoption. If you are open to biracial or African American children that generally is even faster. You have to do a home study regardless of which way you go, you will have even more paperwork and red tape with an overseas adoption. Plus with most overseas adoption you have to travel, which can be very expensive and disruptive to you family and job.

We have adopted twice now. We just brought home our daughter 2 months ago. Our first adoption took about 7 months from first contacting the agency until our little boy was born and with us. Our second adoption took 12 months. Both of these were faster than an overseas adoption, plus we have the add benefit of being with our children from birth. The first year of a baby's life is truly incredible.

Another consideration is cost. I would say the normal cost for a domestic adoption is 15k to 20k right now, while an overseas adoption is 25k to 30k. This includes homestudy fees and travel cost.

I am not against overseas adoption. Many happy families have been brought together through overseas adoption. I wish you luck in whichever path you take.

After 2 failed IVF's we decided on adoption. We started looking at international adoption and ended up adopting a baby boy(now 10 months old) from the USA. We had 3 heartbreaking failed adoptions but our baby was worth the wait. You have to do what is best for your family. Many international agencies have seminars you can attend. Whatever you decide the sooner you start the process the better. We have friends adopting from China and the wait is now close to 2 years! Good luck!

I know a couple who adopted a little boy from Thailand. They had to go through a lot of screening and had to stay in the country for a little while and be supervised/observed with the boy before they could bring him here. He was 10 months old (I think) when they actually brought him home. He is extremely well adjusted. I do not know how much it cost and you have to work with both the US and foreign governments.
