Time doesn't matter....your burn the same amount of calories at any time. The speed really depends on your current level of fitness. Every beginner is different. See for yourself. Try very slow and increase until you feel challenged. It should be a pace that you can hold, but that makes to work and breath harder than usual. You can also throw in some short, fast burst...no more than a minute to begin with, to really get the blood going. These are called intervals and are great for build fitness and speed.

If you are new to exercise it depends on what you want to get and how old you are.
If you want to lose weight, hit the treadmill first thing in the morning before you eat breakfast. With no carbs in the body, the body will use up fat when exercising.
Make sure and eat some high protein food after you finish, ideally within 15 minutes of stopping exercising.
The time depends on how comfortable you are. You can shape up, get fit and lose weight with a hearty walk or if you feel up to it, aim for 30 minutes at a speed you can manage.

I would go just above your normal walking speed and increase it every 5 minutes for 20 minutes, then deacrease every 5 minutes after to return to your first speed. Start at a higher speed the next time you exercise.

Start with 5min @ no incline snail's pace, then 15 min@ slight incline like 3% w/2mph, then back to 5min cool down(same as start up). If you are not on any heart medicine, check pulse rate for progress. After you find this to easy increase your 15 min session incline and mph.

IT REALLY DEPENDS ON THE SHAPE YOU'RE IN - START OFF SLOW - I STARTED AT 2.5 M/HR AND 20MIN - BUT YOU WORK UP FAST - DON'T WORRY! I DO IT WHEN I CAN FIT IN IN - WHICH IS IN THE EVENING - MAKE IT A PART OF YOUR ROUTINE - IF YOU'RE A MORNING PERSON DO IT THEN, OR EVENING - THEN EVENING
