Saying "you May kiss the Bride" is a way of being polite, I guess. The priest is not going to say "kiss the bride" 'cause it sounds like an order. The bride and groom kiss after the vows because it's like sealing the vows and celebrating the union they've made. The Bride and Groom should kiss however they want to as long as they don't look like they're making out. It'd be better if they don't make it that long because they can do that and more after the reception. If they don't kiss after the vow, that would be awkward for everybody and I really can't imagine what would happen. It doesn't say "you May kiss the Groom" because the idea traditionally is that the bride is being given away to the groom. That's why bride gets walked down the aisle by her father and he brings her to the groom. I hope I answered to your satisfaction.

Lots of questions... I have a few of the answers...
They say you MAY kiss the bride because in eras gone by, the couple DIDN'T kiss before marrying. This would be the first time the couple would be allowed (socially, parentally or otherwise) to kiss.
If they don't kiss after the vow...well then they look rather silly to all of their guests, and as if perhaps they don't really love each other after all. :)
It doesn't say you may kiss the GROOM, because, again, it started in the bygone days of courtship, where men would be the ones to initiate something in the relationship. Which is why you didn't see women coming to court men. :)
The other questions...those are a matter of personal preference of the bride and groom.

The kiss seals the contract of marriage. Kiss however you feel at the moment. No matter what you may try to plan ahead, you're going to be feeling so many emotions, you'll forget it all. You'll do what is right for you at the time, but most people don't kiss very long or passionately. You have hundreds of people watching you and there is a HUGE party to get going to. I suspect the groom is given permission to kiss the bride because he just took possession of her.

I know that to both bride and groom from the future married couple, the church imposes a sort of purification before the ceremony, which involves confession, apecial prayers and no touch, for few days.
The priest addressed in the past to the groom, because they used to say the man is the head and he must initiate all actions. But today this is only formal.

years ago, men and women were not allowed to touch each other until marriage.... that means NO sex, NO hugs, kissing hands were accepted..... but NO smooching!.....because t'was disrespectful.
the first time a man was ever to touch a woman was in a wedding ceremony... when he kissed the bride.
if you were also wondering about the rings.... it's not because they symbolize "love"....they were used to "buy the woman off"... when the ring was given, it meant that the man purchased the woman.. the more expensive the ring was, the more "worthy" the woman...the more class (wealth) she had... the less, more simple rings meant low class.
but today, the kiss and the rings are just a part of tradition...
same with the white dress and the tuxido.

well, it's more the sealing of a promise of marriage with a kiss. How long they kiss will depends on the couple. They is no rule as to how long it should be. Well, it's a lovely tradition, so I don't think why a couple won't kiss after the vow.

This question is adorable!
"you may kiss the bride" is old fashioned, but it is the first time you kiss her as your wife. The type of kiss depends on your comfort level as a couple.

Inasmuch as you already know the answers to your questions, what in your past makes you even ask?
