The radio is a scientific oregon and it states 5 kilometres. This is not true, when i get to the local shop, which is just up the hill... the radio can barely get a signal to the other radio and in other places it does not reach its 5 kilometre range ! .. would it be worthwile me investing in a more expensive but a radio with 8 kilometres ?

it all depends on the lie of the land..if there is hills it is shorter, usually the 5km is line of sight with nothing in the middle

Sadly the problem with most hand held walkie talkies as they are called in America are legally only 4 watts. And 4 watts barely make it a couple miles. In most cases 1 mile with obstructions if the units are good.

However, I find better reach with Hand Held Cb Radios. They too are low watt but reach further than most walkie talkies. That's up to 4 miles I believe.

Other than that and you want to reach even further you will need to belong to some kind of Network with Satellite and towers etc, etc.

Of course there is always Ham operator Radios. But I don't know of any hand held models that exist.

NO on no account invest in another more efficient radio.
