At what point are you considered on "active duty"? Is it the minute you enter boot camp?, or is it once you get stationed on a base, or a combat zone? I'm going to join the military by next year and I'd like to know if ill be considered "active duty".

You are on Active Duty status exactly on the day you leave the MEPS station for boot camp. For example, if they tell you to be in the MEPS station at 4 a.m. on the 17th of Feb, 2007 to inprocess and for final physical check up because you will flying out to boot camp that afternoon or evening the same day. Then Feb 17th, 2007 is the day that your ACtive Duty status begins.

while you are in initial training you are on "active duty for training" which is different than "active duty." The moment you graduate from basic training or boot camp and are considered a soldier or Marine or sailor, then you are on active duty, assuming you are not going into the reserves or national guard.

Edit, you are still in training through AIT or other schools before your first assignment, so I suppose I would edit to say once you have completed all initial training.

Hey.. SGT Christine Prescott here.. there are a few different "active duty" meanings.

Boot Camp- ADT (active duty for training)
Reserves: Not active duty but IADT (inactive duty training)
Regular Army- Regular active duty service

Depending which component you're going in to- Reserves or Active Duty going to another base full time (i.e. Fort Bragg).
When you speak with a recruiter.. let them know whether you want full time military (active duty) or reserves (inactive duty)

Hope this helps! Good luck :)

You are considered active duty the day you leave for boot camp from MEPS. If you are in a delayed entry program the time from the day you sign your contract until you leave for boot camp counts as IRR and therefore goes against the inactive portion of you enlistment contract.

It is once you have completed Basic Training and RT. if you have it.. Active Duty ( AD ) can not be assigned until all BT has been completed.

It's the day you enter bootcamp because that's the first day you get pay.
