I think you could be right with the what they do best. take Nicki Clarke for example you can usually tell who's hair he has cut. But like anything everything has it's signature.
not all hairdressers do this though.

Hi, as a stylist I have noticed that too. The most important thing and the hardest is to find a stylist that actually listens to you and what you are looking for. Also one that should be able to tactfully tell you if the style is going to make your hair lay weird, make your head shape out of proportion, or out of balance and have some suggestions that incorporate at least the most important things to you in your chosen style. Ultimately however it is the customers decision. Just like in any service business there are good ones and then some mediocre. Good luck.

I notice my hairdresser, who does both men and women's hair do the same thing IF the customer doesnt say anything.
My observation is this. The human head has the same pattern of hair, and these hairdressers get taught how to approach cutting it, and they follow these rules from step one to five (or seven, who knows) diligently.
Or your particular hairdresser learned hairdressing from instructions on a pair of scissors, lol.

as a hair stylist i listen to what my clients want and do my best to achieve what they ask for sometimes though i have to tell them they dont have the hair to do at the time what they are thinking of but i can do something to get it there . i dont give every client the same because i have men and women clients and that wouldnt look right.

I noticed that some do, but it's not always a good idea because the style may not flattering to every face shape. I'm a hairstylist and I wouldn't do that to my client. I wold give them something that looks good on them, not me.

I think its what they think looks cool, I feel that if i am cutting a clients hair and they suggest something that i think looks dumb, i mite aswell give them what they want with a little of what i want , So a mix and suggest different shapes etc,
