This is easy to resolve. Don't leave the food out so he can just eat when he wants. Have meal times for him, cats are like dogs, they'll eat and eat if its there.

The eating alot could be a sign of worms and the drinking alot of water could be a sign of diabetes.
You should take the cat to the Vet for a full checkup.
Better safe than sorry.

Good luck

I have 2 cats and the "baby" of the two will gorge himself if he sees the other wants to eat at the same time. He shortly thereafter will throw-up because he couldn't handle the amt he just swallowed whole.
Is the food digested before it is thrown-up? I think that you should have him seen by a vet it that is the case. If it is whole food, I think it may be a stress problem and you could analize any changes that may be taking place at home.
If he could get ahold of fresh meat or non-cat food product, he might get a bit of food poisoning mabe.

After a certain age, certain part of a cat's brain dies and the cat becomes "stupid". It's completely normal and not all negative. He will be more loving and easy-going, but he will also not know when he has eaten enough because the part of his brain that used to tell him is not functioning anymore. Just be patient with him, don't squeeze him too much after he eats and ration his portions.

Oh, and take him to a vet.

Those symptoms can be indications of diabetes or hyperthyroidism and you should have a vet check the cat out for those which are both treatable with medication.

They are both life-threatening - the diabetes is more urgent if that is the problem.

This is something that your vet should address. It could be anything from worms to an infection.
