I don't purport to know the mind of God. However, God does things in His own timing, now ours. Some ask why Jesus did not come today with mass media and so forth He could have reached everyone with His message.
I can only guess that the timing of Jesus was God's will and therefore perfect. Even without mass media support, His Word has gone (pretty much) to the whole world.

The being we know as Jesus was God's first creation (Colossians 1:15, 16). He spent much time in heaven training for his assignment before being transferred to Mary's womb. There is no better way because the animal sacrifices were just to make the people aware that a sacrifice was necessary but the sacrifice which had to be made had to be truly equal to that which was lost in order to truly cover it over once and for always. Adam lost his perfect human life and the ability to pass perfection on to all of his offspring. Jesus had to have a perfect human life first so that he could sacrifice it on our behalf but it would have done no good if Jesus was not ready to remain perfect here on earth. God did the best thing for all of us and he isn't finished yet. Jesus is now the princely king of God's Kingdom government. He is ruling at God's right hand. Soon, God will put it into the minds of the human governments to close all false religion. That will be the beginning of Armageddon (God's war against the wicked) and the beginning of our new lives under Christ's Millennial rulership. The best is yet to come.

Jesus was here, right from the very first creation, which by the way was not when you read of Adam and Eve. Thats why you have people who think the earth is 6000 years old, when we know of fossils older than that.
Genesis is the refurbishing of the earth after the destruction of the last earth age, to make it suitable for life in the flesh, thats all.
The creation of it was eons and eons ago.
Jesus was around for that, and quess what =
so were you and I.
Sacrifice of any animal would not have been right. It needed to be a food animal, of which would be used for food, not to just sit there cooked and wait to be rotten. We continue today to use them as food, but not as sacrifices since Christs "death" on the Cross was the blood sacrifice for one and all time.
In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.
(john 1:1)
Jesus Christ was the Word of the Living God, made flesh.

Adam and Eve disobeyed God and God covered their sin by killing an animal and using the animal's skin. The animal was sacrificed because Adam and Eve sinned.
Many, many, many times God tried to get humans (Israel) to obey his commands and they continually refused and did it their way. Just like what is happening today. The blood of animals covered their sins. The blood of Jesus washed away their sins. To receive the free gift of Salvation one must believe that Jesus did what the Bible says about Him. From Genesis to Revelation it is all about Jesus Christ.
The Lord is the Potter and we are the clay. Can the clay question the Potter - the maker - the Creator? Does not the Potter have the right to make good pots and bad pots?

Well, I would not try to out guess God on what was the best way. Jesus did exist from eternity so He was there before the Levitical law, and in fact "Jehovah" in the Old Testament is Jesus in the New. The reason for the animal sacrifices was God demonstrating the seriousness of sin. His teaching that without the shedding of blood there is no remission for sins, was to show man that their sins cost us life, whether it be our own, animals or the Son of God. Sin is serious to God and we should not take it lightly are we are prone to do.

I believe God gives messages that are appropriate for the people of that particular time. People probably liked to do animal sacrifices at that time, and God didn't think they were ready for the message of Jesus.
It's kind of like going to school, you don't give college work to grade school students.
This is based on ideas in my own religion, the Baha'i Faith. I'm not trying to preach to you, but you can find lots of info on the internet if you are interested.
Baha'is also believe in the independent investigation of truth, meaning, you should not have to believe anything just because your parents, teachers, or Church told you so. Question everything and try to decide for yourself if you really believe it or not.

God is above and beyone time. God existence doesn't follow a 'timeline' like we humans do. He gave humans his only begotten son when 'we' needed him, i.e. when we were ready for Jesus to fufill the prophecies. Some have said that viewing the biblical timeline is like watching a child grow up, where, early on, silly activities occur, like in Leviticus and as the population comes to know God better, and eventually, we were ready for Jesus. (Although we nailed HIM to a cross - which wasn't very nice - but prophesy had to be fuffilled)

because people needed time to see the "picture" of the Old Testament sacrifices to understand what Christ was doing. And all the detailed prophecies of His coming to be the sacrifice would not have developed and unfolded to prove to those in the end times (us) that Jesus was indeed God and the only way of salvation. Prophecy takes time to develop and time to come about - God's prophecies are truly dramatic! This way there truly is NO EXCUSE for mankind to say "no" to God. All those before Christ were provided for if they wished to accept it. Salvation was not withheld from anyone. But just like us there was only one way to obtain it.

First of all, Jesus is eternal---this is stated in Hebrews 13:8. Jesus is the second part of the Trinity. He is the physical manifestation of God on earth, that is to say he is God in the flesh. All members of the Trinity are co-equal, in that they always agree and act as one.
Next, God instituted the law to show us the need for Jesus. Humans are "show me" creations, meaning we are a bunch of doubting Thomas's----we have to see in order to believe. Faith come hard; therefore, God must get our attention in order to believe. The Old Testament is a precursor to the New Testament. Everything that is in Genesis leads up to everything that is in Revelation. The Bible must be studied in its entire context, not just in individual verses. Jesus is in every book, chapter and verse because he is God. Because all members of the Trinity always agree as one and act as one Jesus is, therefore, God.
When Jesus died on the cross it was God that died. Jesus days that the Father in heaven gave him the power to lay his life down and to take it up again. Jesus did what only God could do---die for the sins of the world, wash them away and raise himself on the third day and still allow Creation to stay intact. It is really amazing when you consider it all.
Jesus is the better way. Animal sacrifice was to show us that the blood of bulls and goats and birds could never atone for the sin of mankind. Ancient cultures have tried using human sacrifice to atone for the sins of men, but can a sinner atone for another sinner? And how can an animal, which is a lower creation, atone for the sin of a higher creation? Only God could atone for his own Creation, and we humans had to be shown this over time.
We cannot know all the ways of God and it is not given to us to be able to answer all the questions that we can pose. If we understand that Jesus died for us so that we can live eternally, then this is sufficient.

the Levitical sacrifices are a foreshadowing of the messiah and allow for us to completely understand what the messiah did for us. Bit don't forget the messiah only covered the sin offering, and all of the other sacrifices are still in effect (were it not for not having a temple). these sacrifices tell us how we are supposed to serve God since we now have the temple in our heart. Also these sacrifices support the priesthood and again show how we need to depend on God and God's people for our sustenance.
