Basically, refurbished means that the item or unit in question, while having been used before, was completely cleaned (or reprogrammed) and refitted, tested for operational status, then resold.

I just purchased a small computer for $300, monitor, tower, and all, for my hubby to play games on. It was refurbished, and runs just like a brand new one, but without the new price tag.

I run a refurbishing operation at my company where we try to refurbish 15 units a day between two technicians.

Basically, they do a visual inspection of a board and verify that everything looks correct. Then, they place a bed of nails on the board to determin if everything is working well, and replace what isn't. If a replacement doesn't fix the issue, then the issue is with the board and it's scrapped, but that never happens.

Once the unit passes and works as intended, it is calibrated and sent to a customer. I always buy refurbished stuff myself because it's cheaper, and I know it's going to work because it was touched by a human to verify it. You are less likely to have a refurbished item fail than a new item.

Hope this helps!

something was defective with it, it was sent back to the manufacturer and they rebuilt it and tested. if it passes strict standard it is labeled refurbished and resold.

basically it means rebuilt, all the old damaged parts have been replaced, and the unit has been tested as working

Can mean anything from "cleaned up" to "rebuilt," but generally means restored it to working condition.
