Hello, i need to have root canal treatment done and have found an nhs dentist willing to do it for the £42 but they say there is only a 40% success rate and spend about 45mins on it, but private is £260 and they spend 2hours on it. I don't really have this sort of money but if it would make a real diff would be willing to borrow money for it. Can any body out there help as really dont know what to do!!! Cheers Sarah

So is that 90% if you go private? or should nhs treatment be the same? Cheers

Hi Sarah! I would see a different dentist if I were you. This dentist doesnt sound like a decent person at all. All teeth are different and to put a price and time on a root canal like that is just not right. My dentist charges one fee no matter how long or how many visits it takes. Sounds like this guy just wants your money and wont care how well the result of the root canal is going to be.

Yeah Anis 11803 is right. My dentist does alot of one visit root canals times varing from 40 minutes to 90 minutes. The point is though he does the job right no matter how long it takes.I wouldnt waste my time or money on a dentist whos only going to do a crap job.A dentist should have pride in the work he does.I have never heard of such a thing. He should do the best possible job no matter what.

It's possible for it to lead to osteomyelitis, but it's not common. In general it is quite safe, although that doesn't mean it's always painless. I had a root canal done that was quite painful because my facial nerves aren't in the same location as in normal people. I'd be sure to have someone who can drive go with you so that they can give you gas if you need it.

My recent root canal work was spread over 2 visits. It was a complete success, and done on NHS. Maybe get a second opinion if you can find a dentist still taking on new NHS patients. They seem to be as rare as hen's teeth!

I am in American and 7 years ago it cost me $750 dollars. I'm not sue what the money translation is but that didn't even include the crown.

Just last week that same tooth broke off because at the time I couldn't afford the crown. It was going to be another $750. I had to have the root extracted and a partial plate made.

Do what you have to to preserve your teeth. You never know how much you depend on them until they are gone.

A root canal is usually done in 2 - 3 visits depending on how bad your tooth is, and I just paid $975, for tooth #31. It is always better to save your tooth if you can, however it's also recommended to crown the tooth after a root canal.

nhs dentist are ony paid for 45mins of work though many will take 1hrs to do the treatment, if you go to a specilist endodontist you can expect to pay £500 and be in the chair for the best part of a morning or afternoon and there will be a very high rate of success

i dont know how your dentist calculate the success percentage.statistics say that a very intelligent selection of root canal treatment have approx 90% success rate provided all aseptic measures are taken.a single sitting root canal treatment is possible now a days.ask your dentist?

Depending on which tooth it is, have you thought about an extraction? I've had work done on a tooth root before and even with anaesthetic it hurts like hell. An extraction was much less painful. Sorry, but it's true, for me anyway.

.....it'll be £260 well spent if it saves you tooth!! I'm terrified of the dentist, but I know that whatever I've had done I've gone private, and my root canal saved my tooth.....

yes spend the extra money, it is well worth it , it will save you a lot of pain and money in the end to have it done well instead of a half-a$s job done by some guy who probably doesn't even have a license
