If you learn to cook vegetables well, you can forgo the meat which really beefs up a grocery bill. I like to make pizza, it's fairly cheap and it tastes good. Make the crust with 3 cups of flour, 1 tbsp (package) yeast, 1 cup of warm water, a few teaspoons of salt. Knead it together for about 10 minutes, until it becomes smooth. Then put it in a mixing bowl covered with a damp cloth until it is doubled in size. Stretch it out on a cookie sheet covered with cornmeal and top it how you wish.

I also make fried tortilla/ quesadilla things. They are very fast, very easy and very cheap.
Take a tortilla shell, put some shredded cheese salsa and black beans inside. Depending on the amount of filling, either leave flat and put another tortilla shell on top, or fold into a burrito. then fry it all on a low heat in some corn oil. If making the burrito, start with the seams down so they will fry together.

Some tips for shopping cheap.
Invite friends over for a potluck. I have one every week and I usually get about 40 people. This means lots of good food for free. Then you keep some of the leftovers and you have enough food to last a couple of days.

Don't buy meat unless it's a special occasion, or you really really really want it.

Buy bulk whenever you can, especially oatmeal, flower, and other grains.

When buying cheese, for the most part stick to cheddar, and buy it in 2 lb blocks.

make your own food and get creative, you can make a lot on not much money.

Eat pasta. experiment with different sauces and toppings

ramen is cheap, but when you're sick, and developed an MSG sensitivity, it won't seem like such a good idea

don't be afraid of dumpsters. 46 billion pounds of usable food is thrown away in the US every year. This sounds kind of gross, but you can get a lot of food that is thrown away due to broken packaging and other harmless things. NEVER TAKE ANY MEAT OR DAIRY OUT OF A DUMPSTER. eww.

eat out sparingly

Eat well, eat healthy, and don't starve yourself

You can make alot of things out of:

Minute Rice
Macaroni
Cream Soups
Tomato sauce (add italian seasoning if you want)
Vegetables - your favorite
Meat- hamberger, chicken, beef (I personally don't like fish, so don't use it)

If you cook you meat first, then you can just mix rice, soup, veg & meat.

You can do the same using macaroni & tomato sause, rather than rice & crean soup.

I actually did this quite a bit while the children were young & I worked full time. They loved my "Chicken Goop"- Even their neighborhood friends loved it. I was a little embarrashed when neighborhood mothers asked for the recipe, when their children came home raving about it. You can always get creative and add other ingredients.

Fix Ramen noodles as the package dictates, add some frozen veggies per taste (you don't need to add the entire package).

Fix Mac and Cheese, add a little bit of ham (Such as the type of ham used for Sandwiches) and corn.

Make a soup casserole. Fix a box of pasta (any kind), add to that veggies (can be the same frozen veggies you buy for your Raman noodles) and a can or two of Cambell's soup. Top with crushed crackers or crumbled toast. Bake at 350 degrees for about 30 minutes. You can add cheese or meat if you wish before baking.

My brother's favorite was called Texas spaghetti. It is a can of your favorite chili (in Texas the only chili is wolf brand!) mixed with either cooked spaghetti noodles, or the noodles out of the ramen packages if you are too broke. If you have the extra cash, then you should add some grated cheese like longhorn! It rocks, and it is sooo filling! Also we would do spaghetti sauce over rice when we couldn't afford noodles. making the sauce costs too much, so we would buy it, the cost of the tomatoes alone would make up for the cost of the jar. For breakfast we would cook rice, then add milk and butter and cinnamon sugar, kind like oatmeal.

There is a recipe called poor man's soup. It's really good. Easy to make.

1 lb. lean ground beef
4-6 potatoes, peeled and cut into chunks
2 to 4 cups milk
1 or 2 onions, chopped
2-3 cups uncooked macaroni
salt and black pepper to taste

In a large skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef and drain. Meanwhile, in another large saucepan over high heat, bring the potatoes to a boil, then reduce the heat to medium and cook until just tender, about 15 minutes.
Pour off half the water. Add the browned ground beef to the potatoes and remaining water, along with the desired quantity of milk, the chopped onions, and the uncooked macaroni.

Simmer until macaroni is cooked.

Here is another one called poor man stew.

1 lb. ground beef
1 onion
4 med. potatoes
3 carrots
1 can tomato soup

Brown ground beef with diced onion; drain fat. Cut up potatoes and slice carrots in a casserole dish. Add all ingredients. Pour one can of tomato sauce diluted with one can water on top. Bake at 350 degrees until potatoes are tender.

You also can make pizza bagel's

1 jar pizza sauce
Mozzarella cheese
Bagels
Your favorite pizza toppings: pepperoni, hamburger (browned), Canadian bacon, sausage (browned), Green pepper, onion, olives, etc.

Separate mini bagels, spread pizza sauce on each one. Add your favorite pizza toppings then cover with Mozzarella cheese. Bake at 350 degrees for 10 to 12 minutes until edges are golden and cheese is melted and starting to sizzle.

you should just buy TV dinners or instant soups! doesn't require much of your time. but if you feel like cooking I reccomend this easy recipe...I make it for my brother in college beause its really easy to make but still good....

1 (28 ounce) can baked beans
2 (16 ounce) packages hot dogs, sliced
1 (7.5 ounce) package corn bread mix
DIRECTIONS
Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F (200 degrees C).
Pour the can of beans into a 9x13 inch baking dish so they cover the bottom. Arrange hot dog slices so they cover the beans as completely as possible. If too much juice seeps through to the cornbread, it will take longer to cook. Prepare cornbread mix according to package directions. Spread the batter evenly over the hot dog layer.
Bake for 35 to 40 minutes, or until cornbread is cooked through. A toothpick inserted into the center should come out clean.

If that doesn't excite you...heres another good one...Easy Pasta Salad

1/2 lb uncooked pasta, of your choice
1 stalk celery, diced
1 medium tomato, chopped
1/2-3/4 cup Italian salad dressing (to taste)
1/2 cup mayonnaise
salt and pepper
Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil.
Add pasta and cook for 8 to 10 minutes or until al dente.
Drain and pour pasta into a large dish.
Stir in the celery and tomatoes.
In a separate bowl, whisk together the salad dressing and mayonnaise, then pour this mixture over the salad and toss again, to coat.
Cover and chill until ready to eat/serve.

This answer applies as well to someone like me...living in NY as a bachelor who needs quick dinner plans.

1. Go to your local spanish deli and ask for Sasson mix. They sell this in a orange packet. Use this to season pork chops, ribs etc. Then bake.

2. If you can gather a few friends to make a trip to your local Club Warehouse (Costo, BJ's).. go to the meat section. They sell marinated boneless chicken breasts in teriyaki sauce etc... either fry or put in george foreman grill.

3. Go to your local supermarket, get those soup in tetrapacks... like pumpkin soup... just add cheese and croutons serve with toasted bread or if you can spare chage for foccacia bread, great for those wintery nights.
