Well, this is a difficult question, and I doubt that there is really a good answer for this...However, I think it may be because they actually feel insecure about themselves. That may sound cliche, but usually people who are very popular are that way because they care so much about what other people think. They make fun of people who are less fortunate then them because it gives them an ego boost. Plus, they usually do it around the people they are trying so hard to impress. I actually feel kind of bad for them...It must suck to be so insecure in yourself, that you have to make fun of people to feel good about yourself. Of course sometimes they might just be really mean people......

I find that true among wealthy popular people who have no problems and have nothing better to do. Move to the ghetto, everyone gets along, or they hate you for a reason. Things will change eventually.

it is incorrect to generalize people like that, i suppose someone who is considered attractive by many might look down upon one who is considered ugly by having feelings of superiority, just as the rich might look down upon the poor, the strong on the weak, and so forth... power can corrupt, good looks can corrupt, money can corrupt, but not by necessity

Because if they make people feel worse about themselves, they feel better, its all about entitlement. If everyone caters to them, they feel anything they do is allowed.
