At my church http://www.alcf.net we usually invite people to go on a 40 day "fast" or from something or commitment to something in their life. It could be a "fast" from watching television, or a commitment to pray or read the Bible a certain amount of time every day or something like that. Also they pass out a flyer with 7 or 8 areas of prayer that they encourage people to focus on for the next 40 days.
This year we are doing something different. Our Pastor is preaching on growing together as a family and they have asked people to get together once a week in small groups and they've handed out booklets discussing various aspects of growing in our walk with Christ and growing in love for other members of our Christian family. You can find out more by clicking on the link I put at the start of this answer.

Some Nondenominational churches keep Lent and some do not. They can do anything they want. If they were all the same then they would be a denomination.
The Catholic Church follows the Biblical practice of Jesus Christ and the Jews in setting aside days where the entire Church fasts and prays as one in a attitude of constant renewal.
By the solemn forty days of Lent the Church unites herself each year to the mystery of Jesus in the desert and in spiritual preparation for the celebration of His Passion, Death, and Resurrection.
This season of penance is an intense moments of the Church's penitential practice and are particularly appropriate for spiritual exercises, penitential liturgies, pilgrimages as signs of penance, voluntary self-denial such as fasting and almsgiving, and charitable and missionary works.
With love in Christ.

They practice religion 100% per the bible. As you know, the Catholics will pick, choose, and change scriptures to meet their domination theology. They store this radical material in a little black book like you see in the movies. The Nondenominational Church would be like the Evangelicals; their leaders are people like Dr. Billy Graham.

Lent is a man-made tradition and the Bible calls all of these vain. It has nothing to do with your Salvation which is in St. John 3:5. Jesus taught it, the first assembly experienced it in the upper room, and Peter preached it on the Day of Pentecost (Acts 2:38). And when you speak in that unknown language the Holy Ghost will lead you in all truth.

I give up the sinful acts all year long. You can do something for a season but will that really help anything? God wants our full attention all the time, not just part of the time. Why not make a lifestyle change and do what you know is right all the time rather than just for a month or two? give up something for good like overeating, shopping till you drop, unhealthy snacks, any number of things like that. That shows more respect and honor than doing it just for a few months or just to gain favor for a while. Make it a lifestyle change.
