Anybody that knows or been through an interview like this..

I had an interview today for a police officer position. I am an auxiliary officer with this department and have been for 4 years, know most of the guys, higher ups, etc. Today was the interview for a full time position. The interview went well, however a few times, the police chief mentioned things like, "if you don't get it this time, we're going to be hiring a lot next year.." and "don't get discouraged, your application will remain on file for a year" He mentioned that a few times. He asked about 5 questions about me.

When he said that I started to get worried.. I go to all the training, calls, etc.. however, when they mention things like that, is that a bad sign? Or do they tell that to everbody? I know people on the department and I am sure my lieutenant on the department will put a word in for me?

During our group interview, he told everybody the same thing. However, why would he mention it a few times?

Its never a good idea to try to figure out what the other person is thinking in an interview...it can make you appear apprehensive. It is your time to shine...and you should take advantage of it. If you have another opportunity like this, I would ask the interviewer, point blank, what he was trying to communicate to me with those comments. It will show confidence on your part, and it will demonstrate that you would make a great cop...not letting an ambiguous comment slip by...

He probably wants to ensure a good response to future job postings. Since you're already there, and know the system, that's to their advantage. And he's also trying to be nice, help keep morale up, etc.

I went through a job search about a year ago, and all you can really do is stand up for yourself, and be very careful with your expectations.

I stayed too long at my last job. Maybe you should start at least an informational search to see what else might be out there.

Good luck.

well it sounds to me he really liked you and for whatever reason for the position RIGHT NOW he cannot hire you. he probably has his hands tied right now -- like someone over him like the mayor or city council -- whoever is the chief's boss may already have someone hand selected for this position. everything like that is political. he has to do what his superiors say to keep his job but still try to staff his dept. with good people.

send him a thank you note for taking the time to meet with you and mention that you hope to hear from him soon if not now, in the near future for a position.

what you got was a "canned response".....it is how they "teach" people to interview, which i totally disagree with. It is a way of keeping them non-commital, until others confer with them, and a decision is made. Your interview probably went well:) Good luck, i'll keep my fingers crossed for you! Some in my family are cops or firefighters, whatever you do, stay as safe as you can:)

It's difficult to say, my unit is very difficult to get into.I needed 6 years standard service to get even considered.I'm now an armed special branch officer, though i'm guessing your american with you putting lieutenant.I'm sure it's very different there, time will tell.good luck.

Some people will do that to everyone they interview so whoever doesn't make it will be "let down easy". I wouldn't worry about it.
