You get it from the usual suspects: alcohol and smoking. The statistics are not good; heavy drinkers who also smoke are 75% more likely to get throat cancer than a non-smoker, non-drinker.
The morbidity from throat cancer is bad. Many end up with a partial or total laryngectomy (removal of the "voice box", or larynx), which either severely limits, or destroys, the voice. Partial laryngectomy results in severe swallowing problems, with aspiration of foods and liquids into the trachea and lungs. Patients frequently need a tracheostomy.
Total laryngectomees have no voice of their own and have a permanent stoma (hole in the neck) through which they breathe. Showering can be difficult, and swimming is out of the question.

the webmd site is a good one, also try the american cancer society website. Throat cancer is USUALLY gotten by using tobacco. However, smoking AND drinking at the same time (which a lot of people do....they like to have a cigarette when they are having a drink, even if they are non-smokers...i know a few people this way), that increases your risk of getting esophageal cancer by 50% which is a LOT!!!

Causes are not known, but risk factors are smoking, consuming tobacco etc. Better do a search on internet. A good site for all medical information is www.webmd.com but there can be special sites for cancer.
