Well, for your safety, if you get a dog, the dog might scare the crap out of her. See, if you get another cat, she might show that she's not going to be under the level that the other cat is in. They might fight, or even kill eachother (or some body kill someone.)
I say you should get another dog. Like my dog, a Bichon X Shih-Tzu. She's small, but they may grow up to a medium. They are too friendly but they can scare off any cats, though!

I am not sure about that, I had rescued 2 male cats as kittens both passed at 17-12 years old, Fred passed last May :(.. and I never had a real problem in the yard.
Then we rescued a 2 year old female siamese, in August, Horizon is a gentle soul and some cat intimitated her out in the backyard; cause she would rather go out the front door now. It might depend on the personality of the cat too..
We did rescue a maltese October 29th and those 2 get along but I haven't seen any stray cats out in the backyard anymore either.
I think it's really what kind of a pet you want, cats are really no trouble they are so totally self contained. Dogs need all sorts of things that cats wouldn't put up with like walks ;-)

A dog would scare ur tabby if he's scared of the cat next door. I find that cats only get on with dogs if the dog was there first and the cat first lived with it as a kitten but then the cat next door wouldn't like the dog either.
If u get a cat, he might not like that either but a dog would bother him more. If the new cat is female she could fight off the cat next door for him (2 of our females are always having spats with next door's female) so I think that's the best option.

Do you think that your cat will accept another animal? Maybe he'd be scared. If you think he will, then I'd say a kitten? That way he can feel like Boss-cat. A dog/puppy would probably freak him out a bit more. Of course, it depends on if you're at home enough to settle either in.
BTW: I found that sex of cat didn't make a difference re territory!
My cat had triplets, 2 boys and a girl. Boy 1 ruled over Boy 2, Boy 2 ruled over Girl, and Girl ruled over Boy 1!

Well, if you do not like this female cat around, you should get a dog because the dog will be able to chase it away. Otherwise if you just want another pet, I personally like cats better. Except it is totally up to you.

The females usually are slightly more agressive however another cat would not be the answer unless you gor a female who your cat could accept, but if your male cat is so intimidated a dog would never work

That would be a bad reason for getting another pet. What if you got another cat and it terrorised the male you have now? Some animals are just naturally afraid of other animals. No different than human reactions...Don't you know someone who intimidates you or has in the past? Just give your cat comfort and encouragement,so he knows he has someone on his side...If you get another pet,get it because you want another pet to love not to show another who's boss.

Both are great, but a cat is better if you are out at work all day, i have 4 cats and its great cos they go out and play all day, there is no walking them in the rain and the cold - they are very self sufficient - get a couple of kittens together so they are company for each other. One of my boy cats is very territorial so it depends - if they're neutured they wont be as territorial.

I think a Dog is in your future. YOu can play fetch with them, walk them on the leash, and if your cat likes dogs, then maybe your cat will play with the dog.
