That sounds to me like it might be some sort of OCD problem - I think you should go to the doctor.

It's not weird at all....it's just part of a complex called OCD (obsessive/compulsive disorder) which takes many forms. For some people, they have to double check that the oven and iron are off several times before they can leave the house. For others, when they turn off a lamp, have to go to the 2nd click, for example. For others, they click their teeth a certain number of times between telephone poles as they are driving along. The OCD many people are familiar with is people who can't stop washing their hands (many more times than is necessary for cleanliness.)
OCD behaviors are generally a stress reliever, a way of managing other (usually unrelated) anxieties.
Lots of people use these----look at any professional athlete--notice how they all have their built in routines: ie Steve Nash has to bounce the ball twice, wait a beat, bounces once more before attempting a free throw .... Tiger takes one practice swing, adjusts his stance and then drives.... These things relieve the anxiety attendant with performance. *
Adding up numbers seems like a pretty good one---it has value in that it is flexing your brain a little bit. And it makes a lot more sense than many OCD's. It's just giving your brain a mini-workout.
People who get addicted to video and computer games are the ones that really have my sympathy. It definitely can be a stress reliever, but it sucks up so much time!
(*I made up these pre-shot routines....just used them as a example...but I know all athletes have them)

Throughout my youth, I was an obsessive counter of objects - including some whose existence in structures was deduced rather than observed. Whenever I walk into a wooden panelled room, I instantly recall the days when I would have counted panels, vertical and horizontal mouldings and attempted to calculate the most efficient method of construction - minimising the number of joints.
Do not worry about your obsession, the practice will stand you in well during the rest of your life.

Looks like some kind of neurosis which doesn't need treatment unless it is causing too much distress. Bach Flower essences are helpful for most of our mental conditions and can be generally safely used, by one's own selection. To know more about them, go to:
http://floweressencesintro.onlinecourse.com/
It is a free, online no-credit course.

It isn't a problem and it is not a 'mental health' issue. You simply have a passion for numbers. I have the same thing and I've lived perfectly well for 58 years. Keep on counting.!

It sounds like it could be an obsessive-compulsive disorder. Does it rule your life? Does it prevent you from doing other things? Do you feel like something bad will happen if you don't add them up?
Any of the above symptoms should prompt your to seek professional attention.
