When it comes down to it, the LCD is Considerably MORE reliable than Plasma....

Plasma is better in "Sunlit" rooms or for hanging on the wall, they have improved some with "Anti-burn-in" circuits, but they still do not have the LIFE of an LCD TV....

It's much more expensive to maintain a Plasma TV.

The answer to your question is not an easy one. It is going to depend on the room you are putting your TV in as well as the type of programs you like to watch. A plasma TV is by far the better picture quality. They produce hundreds of more color variations and well they do not have a response time as LCD's do. The big downfall of plasma is that because it has glass panel front, you can get a lot of glare/reflection if you are putting it in a well lite room (ie a lot of windows). Lcd's have a plastic panel so you do not get any glare. also as good as plasma's are you still have a risk of image burn in not on LCD's, impossible to do it on an lcd. The downfall of lcd is that they have a response time (how fast the TVs processor responses to the image coming into it. They also do have as high of a contrast ratio as plasma so you do not get the depth of the colors. Also a 50" and larger plasma is going to be cheaper then a 50" and bigger LCD.
My honest recommendation is find out what kind of room it is going in. Darker room go with plasma, brighter room go with LCD. The truth is judge your lighting because if you have a good quality TV with a good HD source going into it both will be an absolutely fabulous picture in your home. I personally like samsung, both LCD and plasma.

I would stick with LCD - it is tried and true technology that has been around since the 70's. I remember when it first came out - it quadrupled my calculator batter life from the old LED's.

Also, I have heard from gamer friends (I am a student at DeVry and I know people who are studying game programming) that plasma is not as good for gaming - if you want to hook up your Xbox or PSwhatever - LCD's have a faster refresh rate, higher resolution and use as much as 30% less power. See all pros and cons in the article from CNET listed as my source.

50'' plasma :: although LCD lasts longer, u can see the colors even through the light and bigger screens have better quality, LCD screens over 46'' become big from behind, just like a CRT screen whereas Plasmas can stay flat and slim even bigger than 70''

do NOT. I repeat do NOT get a 50" LCD. You will regret it.
for that sized TV, get a plasma.
The picture quality is much better. With LCD, pay attention to the refresh rate. It should be lower than 5ms, or you will see major ghosting on that sized tv

I recommend you take a look at this TV. One of the best out there.
