Pubic hair works as a cushion. It protects the bony structure of the pelvis from bruising during sex. Once you absorb that thought, it's kind of strange to think about the fact that hair grows back from the pubis and into the space between the buttocks (butt crack). A definite throwback from our caveman days, when 'hole' selection wasn't considered much. Of course, humans haven't lost butt hair as we've evolved and adapted. So much of the discretion of hole selection... or butt hair on men.

As others have pointed out, its main function is to act as sort of a filter to help keep dirt and other nasties away from a body opening. Not always needed these days with us wearing clothes and practicing good general hygene.
Second, it provides sensory feedback that someting is getting close to a sensitive area. This can be either a cautionary warning or pleasant stimulus. depending on the occassion.
Third, pubic hair acts as an external lubricant during intercourse. It helps keep two bodies from sticking together when they shouldn't.
Finally, it's decorative. Some people choose to enhance this by trimming or removal of pubic hair. It's a way of saying "Look over here. This is interesting."

Nobody can really say for sure. (That's why you are asking here, right?)

Why does any hair exist? On places like the head, eyebrows and eyelashes, it protects from sun, dirt and abrasion. I can imagine that armpits could become painful without hair. And if I was a sexaholic I might appreciate the cushioning that two full tufts of pubic hair would offer.

There's a few things happening in pubic regions that are different to other areas on your body.
The sweat in pubic areas is thicker, almost milky in comparison to elsewhere on your skin.
The smell is different because of the sweat and pheromones. I don't know how effective pheromones are with the poor sense of smell that humans have. We need to be very close to notice such things, at which point you are normally committed to a course of action anyway.

You've made me think. I'm going to cancel that Brazilian on Wednesday.

Body hair on humans doesn't perform a function. Body hair on animals performs a function. It keeps animals like dogs and cats warm when they are outside. Anyone who thinks body hair, excluding the hair on one's head, serves any function whatsoever is believing a lie. One could assume that body hair keeps a person warm. Why don't women have hairy chests like men if that is true? Clothes keep people warm. Body hair is not necessary. The hair on a person's head will keep a person warmer, but body hair does nothing. People who think body hair is attractive on women will always create some reason as to why they believe body hair performs a function.

if you look at all the different areas of the world.. people in that area have different levels of hair. look at arabs.. they were designed to have a lot of hair to protect them from hot sand and hot sun.. hense their eyebrows.. people in other countries are fair with little hair.. it is all about the environment you are in..and your ancestory.. so like the above said.. it is a form of protection from the elements.. now as far as pubic hair it is an opening of the body and would require protection.. good question tho

Just like eyebrows and eyelashes, the hair is there to protect the areas below it from coming into contact with harmful material(s).

The physique has various common instincts. the 1st and maximum powerful is survival. the 2nd is to reproduce. The physique likes to maintain specific temperatures for optimal sperm and egg production so in our genital section we've hair to help with this. For adult men, whilst the temp is basically too extreme, the sack willdangle extra. whilst the temp is basically too low the sack will decrease extra attempting to maintain warmer. there is extra to this yet i'm bored with typing
