Is we removed fear and ignorance, then religion would most certainly fade away. Then could we always look on the bright side of life (and whistle)?

That wasn't Brian singing that song. Well, he did join in, but it wasn't his initiative. The reason is because, "this'll make things turn out for the best!"
I don't know where you get your premise about religion though. God is the antithesis of fear and ignorance, so getting rid of those two things would definitely move us into a closer relationship with Him. Providing, of course, that we aren't clinging to unproven and unprovable atheism.
