Here is a little cycling tutorial. If you are spinning, (Pedaling quickly) you will feel it in your lungs and heart, therefore you are doing cardio. If you are honking (pedaling larger loads more slowly) you feel it in your legs, (burning sensation)and are in anaerobic training, therefore building more muscle.

Having said all that, if you are new to cycling, be it on the road or stationary, you will build muscle simply because you are moving in a new way but only until your muscles have adapted.

I would say a bit of both although probable not building muscle as toning muscle, as well as maintain your fitness level and getting a great cardiac workout.

Cycling is a kind of aerobic workout by which U can reduce ur deposited fat as well as fat content of ur blood.
Fat is simply metabolized/breaks down to excretable materials n energy produced by which is utilized for ur muscle work out.

Normally when ever u start any sort of workout, ur mucles cells becomes broad/ thick a lil bit also it starts multiplying according to the workout, to meet demand.(mechanism of body building)
Also muscle fibres will be in a partial contacted stage if u continues workout which is refered as tone of muscle.

In ur case by cycling there will be fat burn out, muscle tone up but not much increase in muscle size.
Cycling gives u work out to muscles of ur lower body parts such as thighs, halmstrings, calves, glutes, also upper body such as abs, obliques, serratus.
More over it gives u cardio workout, increases blood circulation, lowers blood lipid levels, stabilizes hormones n catecholamine levels, gives nerve tissue stimulation too..

Go on Work out,
Live Well..
Regards.

When working out, your burning fat and calories, also turning fat into muscle. It might seem like your not losing weight, maybe putting on but remember muscle weighs more than fat!
So keep it up!!

you are doing both. I have heard that if you walk you burn fat opposed to running. running does burn calories but the main thing it does is improve your breathing. Try going for a long walk as it keeps your heart rate low but burns fat as you use more energy resources from fat. Worth a try I guess!

A bit of both, depending on the amount you do.

Just be aware that muscle is heavier than fat so this type of exercise will not in itself cause you to lose weight if that is your intention, you will however notice a gradual change in your body shape.

Cycling is only part of an exercise regime, swimming is far better.
