Dentistry is a specialty but dentists do practice medicine. Dental students must study the entire human body as carefully as other medical students because many diseases are first recognized by oral inspection. Also, many dental procedures such as anesthesia and bleeding may be safely performed only after determining a patients general health or the implications of their diseases and treatment. Dentists have doctoral degrees and 'doctor' literally means teacher (look it up?). Good dentists maintain your dental health and 'teach' you how to help yourself. Almost all doctors limit their practice to a field of expertise and Dentistry is no different. You know the rest of the drill.

Let's say that your dentist is Walter Jones. He is Dr. Jones. After his name, Walter Jones, DDS ---the DDS stands for Doctor of Dental Surgery. That's why when you see cheesy "infomercials" and the person is wearing a lab coat....notice the caption. Instead of saying i.e., Jim Patterson, DDS It will say "Dr. Jim Patterson, DDS" which is SAYING it twice. I have many friends who are dentists and oral surgeons, believe ME, they would rather be under dentistry than general "medicine",,,,look in a phone book under Physicians....a little crazy, huh? I, too, would rather be in "Dentistry" AND darn proud to be there. I hope I helped.
