First you should have your vet check your new puppy to see if it is really a cold or if your pup has a upper respiratory infection.
Human food for a pup is not a good idea. Their stomachs can't digest it and it will cause many problems. You don't say what kind of new pup you have so here's an overview.
If you have a small breed pup then a quality puppy food for small breeds is in order. If your pup is a large breed then a large breed food is the right thing to feed your pup.
Beneful is a supermarket food and not of good quality. some that are are NUTRO and PRO PLAN. They are of high quality and come in many variety's to suit any dog. Their are designer food out there but they are expensive and really not worth the price you would have to pay.
You should wet your pups food with a bit of water to moisen the chunks so it's easier for your pup to chew and digest.
Really human food is not good for pups or any other dog. You can not provide all the minerals and vitamins a good quality puppy or dog food does.
Good Luck with your new pup!

I know this answer will be against the current trend, but I really think you should feed your dog a commercially available, high-quality pet food. Something like Purina, Iams, or Science Diet. I would definitely not recommend creating a diet yourself, especially a raw diet. Raw foods, like chicken, can cause intestinal upset (diarrhea) due to Salmonella. Also, a homemade food won't be balanced for a growing puppy. Please remember that dogs are evolutionarily carnivores. Grains/vegetables are not necessarily a part of their diet. If you want to do some research, www.hillspet.com is a great website.

Natures Variety makes both a Raw Instict Dry dog food as well as "human food". The Pet Supplies by my home has a freezer there that carries Chicken, mixed dinners, etc. You just have to cook it.
When one of our dogs are under the weather, we feed them brown rice, Carrots and Boneless, Skinless chicken breasts with plain yogurt for dessert.
Me personally, I do not recommend feeding your dog Beneful. A couple weeks ago there was an article that dogs were getting sick from Beneful. Several people found a toxic mold on the food.

Is he coughing? may be kennel cough.Has he been to the Vet for check up?
A premium brand of puppy kibble is the best choice. It has everything the pup needs for health and growth.
