I have been told its not necessary for dormas below a certain size as long as all the building regs are met, can someone who knows more confirm this for me please?

You usually need planning permission to make such external alterations certainly on the front of your property. Unless of course you are my next neighbour then you ignore all rules and even build part of your walls on other peoples property - until caught out and threatened with partial demolition ;)

i think any building work that affects the overall view of a structure and the surrounding neighbourhood needs planning permission.
Councils can be pretty petty some times so best to give them a call and make sure.
