Are you a wrestler? That sounds like something a wrestling coach would say. Water is your best friend for weight loss; it curbs your appetite. The only harm water can do is if you are trying to make a certain weight class in a sport and have been dehydrating to try to make it, drinking too much water will replenish those lost fluids and you will regain what water weight you have lost weight, thus not making weigh-ins.
I am on a diet now and I drink 8 glasses of water a day, by doing this I suppress my appetite. Whenever I feel hungry I will eat an apple and then drink a glass of water. That works like a charm for me.
Remember when you are dieting most of the weight lost is water weight not fat! So don't be discouraged if you gain a lot of weight back, your body could be just replenishing lost water weight. I do the mirror test to check my progress, I could care less what the scale says. How many inches I have lost around the waist is what is important, not how much weight I have lost.

How can water make you fat? There's no calories of any kind in it! If anything, it makes you feel bloated (water retention). Drinking water is a good thing to do because it helps wash out the impurities we put in our bodies every day.
Enjoy!

For a long time I used to think so and then I had heard that drinking water can actually help you lose weight if one is trying to lose weight b/c it helps rid the body of toxins.

Definitely. In fact, you should just stop eating altogether. That way no fat can ever get in!
