This is inspired by a 7th day adventist who believes the rest of the christians have the wrong sabbath (I don't believe in a sabbath at all but that's beside the point).

I'm not calendar expert but let's say that the world was created in 7 days by god as christianity states. Didn't the calendar that we know come much much later than that? How do christians know when the sabbath actually is? They could be worshipping on god's wednesday, 7th day adventists on god's Tuesday.

I can top that Mr. Sagan. Did you know we have no reason whatsoever outside of the Holy Bible to divide our month into weeks?
A year, a day, and a month are are scientifically proven entities that can be traced back to the natural world. But not a week. It comes directly from the Bible. Neat, huh?

The Old Testament sabbath was on the seventh day of the week of creation because God rested on the last day so to speak. Hence, Saturday is the Jewish sabbath. In the Acts of the Apostles, greater emphasis was placed on breaking of the bread on Sunday (Easter is the day the Lord rose from the dead). The Ressurrection is of greater importance to Christians. We are no longer bound by Jewish laws. The Christian sabbath is Sunday and not Saturday anymore. In that case, why don't the 7th Adventists practice animal sacrifice in the Temple, wear yammukas, and have Hannukah, etc. I guess they want to become Jews right? with regards to the calendar, whether or not it is still exact when the days of creation are is not of importance. THe jews basically followed the accurate Egyptian calendar. Later on it became the Roman calendar and then the Gregorian calendar. Accuracy of day is not the issue. The point is laying aside a day out of the week to rest the body from labor and to worship God on that day.

The misunderstanding from a Christian point of view comes from the idea that the sabbath is saturday. If you read the levitical law you will see that is incorrect. A sabbath is a "rest". God started the Jewish calander with Moses and instituted every 7th day as a rest. It happened to be on Saturday, but God also instituted a number of other sabbaths which were not on the seventh day. These were festivals and holidays. When Christianity came along, it was based on the first day of the week because of the resurrection, and it began on the day of Pentacost which was a Sunday. So every 7th day from the beginning of the church is a "sabbath" or a "rest" and is on Sunday. It is refered to in the New Testament as "the Lord's day".

LOL. True true. But the truth is, Saturday is deemed the Sabbath by the Jews. Christians only go on Sunday because it's the day Jesus rose from the grave, so Christians are breaking one of the 10 commandments. Even more important than that, I think if there is a god, I really doubt he is so nit picky he's going to get mad over the day you worship. However, the world was created billions of years ago with no days. Keeps rolling along.

The sabbath is the Lord's Day and its remembrance is one of the Ten Commandments. If we have questions about the day and it causes division among believers then I say we're missing the point. If God says to remember it and keep it holy, and we don't observe it, who loses? Compare this to when you get correspondence from a friend telling you that he is inviting everyone to a party on the following Saturday. Then you hear from someone else that the party was moved to Sunday. Why not call your friend and find out whats going on?

If Christianity is a ritual or rite of passage into acceptance with our religion and our way to Heaven, then lets form a committee for each religion and each try to be closest to the truth. If God is real, and if He has feelings and desires for us, then He will answer our questions when we ask sincerely. Pray, and then wait for an answer.

Calendars existed long before the one we "know". The earliest appear about 3000 BC, give or take a century.

The original calendars are lost to us because of the absence of literacy before 3500 BC, so we have no way of speculating about your question.

However, the first 11 chapters of the Bible can be safely dated as being written between 2800 and 2000 BC, and so the tradition of the holiday called the "sabbath" is a very old one. I'm not sure I care if we ever skipped a day in history somewhere.

(Did you know that "God" is a proper noun regardless of what you believe?)

Those 7 days of creation Is 1000 yrs each, on the 7th day Day rested, Many christians today & yes I am a Christian But I know how to look at this the correct way, Many Christians today, looks at God getting completely worn out after creating everything in 6--24 hr. days, That is not the real picture, Each day was 1000 yrs. That is also in the NT. Would I want to serve a God that get worn out where as he has to take a day off, I would really be in a bad shape if I needed him On the sabbath. Now Moses did bring the 10 Commandments, There was alotted a day for the earthly sabbath for people & & that would have been Friday evening to Saturday evening, But also when they kept the Jewish sabbath they could not fix their meals on the sabbath nor anything what so ever, Period. There fore they had to fix all food they were going to eat before the sabbath, many people today wants to keep a sabbath, but yet they fix their meals on the sabbath, & according to the law that is wrong, If anyone is going to keep a sabbath they have to keep everything that it pertains to, That 7th day that God rested, was a type of the milliennium of 1000 yrs. Now we come to Jesus Christ, they tried everything to condem him for healing on the sabbath, plucking corn on the sabbath, & so on, They could not see that our sabbath was in that man call Jesus Christ, Now after Jesus is crucified Jesus said come unto me, & I will give you REST(SABBATH), Now for the Gentiles Apostle Paul preached to the Gentiles to worship on Sunday, You can find that in 1st Cor. 16:1-2 Concerning the collections of the saints or tithing of the saints, Paul said to bring it into the storehouse on the 1st day of the week, So if we kept a literal sabbath, Then those Gentiles would have had to come to Church on Saturday, then go home & come back Sunday to pay their tithes. This word sabbath means rest. God rested on the 7th day (1000 yrs.) typing out the 7th day for the milliennium of 1000 yrs. Now our rest is in Jesus Christ, & us Gentiles worship on the 1st day of the week to honor Jesus resurrection. One more thing to ask the 7th day advantis. Why do you drive your car on the sabbath, in the law it was wrong to even pull your ox out of a ditch, & why do you cause your pastor to work on the sabbath preaching to you & why do you pay someone else to break your sabbath by eating out or buying gas for your car, You need to walk to church & tell your pastor to sit down because that law also pertain to him. Think about it.

Christians observe Sunday as the sabbath because Constantine decreed that Sunday, "the sacred day of the supreme god", should be the sabbath. not Saturday as it was up until that point. the sabbath ran from sundown on Saturday until sundown on Sunday. up until then Christians followed the Jewish sabbath. it's not a coincidence that Constantine chose Sunday as he had previously been a worshipper of 'sol invictus'. the week was an invention of the Babylonians, like so much of our calender and time keeping.

We observe the Sabbath on the day the Lord Jesus Christ rose from the grave. On that day the apostle broke bread, the sacrament and it has been the same since!

you are absolutely correct. for Sunday is just a day that man picked out to set as the "sabbath" day.

and of course a true Christian would not merely praise the Lord only one day a week. so really this day can be whenever. there is a church event everyday of the week, why only go on one day?

God bless
