Low-grade reflux is treated with antibiotics to prevent potential infection and pyelonephritis in the kidneys, until the reflux resolves and closes on its own. Reflux itself is a relatively common thing, and most people have at least 1 refluxing papilla, though it usually does not cause symptomatic disease and will close spontaneously.

Higher grade reflux is treated surgically via endoscopy, laparoscopy, or open procedures.

I hope your son is ok and that the reflux is not serious -- good luck and take care.

As the child is small, he should be put on an antibiotic in low dose to prevent urinary tract infection. It must be given regularly for a prolonged period and urine examination must be done monthly. If there are break through infections or the grade of reflux is increasing, he will ultimately need surgery. If reflux is of low grade and infections are prevented, it may resolve on its own.
