I am wondering: what is the size of the area of Canada near the U.S. border where most Canadians actually live? I have read that 80% -90% of Canadians live within 100 miles of the U.S. Border. However, I am unable to get any statistics for the size of that geographical area. On this map: http://www.canadainfolink.ca/chartten.htm the size of the areas of Canada where people actually live seems really small. Most people live in Ontario or Quebec, but most of Quebec is uninhabited frozen tundra. I am only able to find population statistics for each province of Canada, which doesn't help much.
So, what is the geographical size of the area near the U.S. border where 90% of Canadians live, and which U.S. state is about the same size and population of that area?
The population of Canada is about the same as the population of California. It seems that the populated regions of Canada are about the same geographical size of California, as well, but without statistics, I can't be sure.

As you can probably see on your map the border runs the entire latitude length of the country and if you are asking how thick that band would be that runs along the border that is densely populated I can't even guess. I can tell you that it would be larger than any state. It's not a good question because in Alberta, for example, you'd have to drive 4 hours north of the border to get to a major (Canada major) city, Calgary, then another 3 to get to Edmonton. So it's hard to know really what you're asking. Savvy?

You seem like you've figured a lot of your question out. If it helps you, Canada's population right now is about 30 million. And since most Canadian cities are near the US border (but not all! - like Calgary and Edmonton), 90% of Canadians (so about 27 million) are almost within walking distance with the US. I'm sure about the population and square footage of each state but I hope those numbers help!
