Over the past couple of days my 12 year old border collie has developed an excessive thirst?! She is healthy aside from this,no temperature, lethargy or anything only this thirst. However this is subsequently resulting in her having a weaker bladder too, needing to go all the time with the occasional accident. Any advice greatfully appreciated.

You are so wise to notice and jump on this immediately!

You have a lot of answers referring to diabetes, but this could also be Cushings..she really needs to see the vet..

The first thing that springs to mind is: Have you changed her food or tit -bits to anything that contains a little more salt? Secondly although she seems healthy and you've looked after her well for her to be 12, a check-up with the vet would be a good idea to insure that she isn't having any internal age-related problems developing. I'm sure the vet could also let you know if they can think of a reason for this thirst.
Good luck.

I think you should see the vet to have this checked out - excessive thirst and frequent urination could be symptoms of a medical condition which needs treatment, particularly given the dog's age. Try a google search on 'excessive thirst in the dog '- lots of info!

Seek advice from your vet as her age could mean there is an underlying problem like diabetes or kidney/liver problems. Also if she was spade this also can affect her bladder in old age. Our Doberman had exessive thirst in his final years but it was nothing to worry about so she may be perfectly ok but better safe than sorry.

Many common natural remedies are claimed to have blood sugar lowering properties that make them useful for people with or at high risk of diabetes. Learn here https://tr.im/XJDwb

A number of clinical studies have been carried out in recent years that show potential links between herbal therapies and improved blood glucose control, which has led to an increase in people with diabetes using these more 'natural' ingredients to help manage their condition.

Border Collies are known for being diabetic, it comes from too many years of inbreeding too closely. I would take her to the vet as soon as possible and have them test her for it. My dog did the same thing and he was diagnosed with diabetes at the age of 9 months. he had to take insulin shots for the rest of his life.
