We've been invited to a Chineses New Year Party tomorrow. I think I read somewhere once that you should wear something red for luck - but I can't find it again. I don't want us to all turn up wearing a red garment only to find we're insulting our hosts. Also, is there anything we should take with us to offer the hosts as a gift? It's in a restaurant so the food and drink is provided.

I shall be celebrating it with some of my Chinese friends. I always wear an ethnic Chinese silk dress when I go to New Year celebrations, ( I bought several back from China a few years ago). I usually buy my hostess, who is also a very good friend, a gold charm for a gold bracelet I gave her about five years ago, she is building up quite a collection now! I take suitable toys for the children, whisky for her husband and also whisky for Grandpa , Grandma gets a huge carton of her most favourite thing in the world Devon Clotted Cream, she can`t buy it in London !

I'm going too, I love Chinese new Year, I love to celebrate different holidays with other cultures, and I find it very flattering when I'm asked to attend, I love trying new foods, and learning about it. We have Jewish friends over every Christmas eve, we have such a great time eating and making fun of our religions LOL< laughter goes well into the night, is'nt THAT what it's all about ?, LOOK, I'm "KVELLING" TOO, LOL !

well as you rightly said, the colour red symbolises good luck and so, if you want to, you can but really i don't think it's something people should make a huge fuss over. as for gifts, i don't know but it doesn't have to be expensive. hope you have a good time and enjoy yourselves. and i want to say 'kung hei fat choi'- or happy new year to you in english!

Red is the most lucky colour for Chinese people. They love gold above everything but as most people would not give gold, jade is always well received.
