so often i hear Christians saying that morals/ethics are not possible without religion (and yes, many DO say this even if YOU don't). From the ones who do believe this, I'd like to what heinous acts they would unleash on the world if ever they lost their faith.

Ent Wife: I am sincerely sorry to hear that. I cannot imagine a life where my delusion was so central to my being that without it I would kill myself. Take care and don't listen to any of us rationalists; it could be bad for your health!

There isn't much that they couldn't justify with their holy book anyway.

Aren't you confusing two different concepts here?

"Crime" is a legal term; "moral/ethical" is religious-societal, (although there may be areas of commonality). For example, the manufacture and sale of alcohol is legal (not a crime in most non-Muslim countries) yet when one considers the number of car accidents , broken homes, destroyed lives, lost fortunes, etc, how moral/ethical is that manufacture and sale of alcohol?

Atheists do have a moral code based on society and the laws that that society enacts. But THOSE are relative. Christians, on the other hand, have a morality based on an absolute code.

If I never knew about Christianity and if I were an atheist (and an evolutionists), based on the concept of survival of the fittest, my moral code would be simple : Do WHATEVER I have to do in order to survive, taking advantage of loopholes that exist within any legal code that may be there.

I wonder if you'll get any real answers to this, instead of middle class middle Americans who have what they need saying "I would never..."

Some of the Christians who make the above statement base it on what they were like before they were 'saved.' Drugs, alcohol-abuse and general thuggery are the ones I've seen here. Jail-house conversion is common, so we'd likely be on reasonable grounds to add murder, larceny, and just about anything else to the list.

The problem, as I see it, is that a great many Christians (and yes, many DO, even if you don't) assume that whatever works for them will necessarily work for everyone else. It's like they 'just can't imagine' any other way of living in the world than theirs.

Let's be sensible. The obvious answer is not much difference. But you have to consider also the fact that religion has had some effect on society as it is, and whether or not you believe in God it is his restraints that prevent chaos. Without a moral compass the world of humans would be in some trouble we would be pretty much as the law if the jungle ...that is to say without a moral compass...There is no doubt that we wold follow our own sense of morality which comes from where? If we are saying without God ...we would be in Chaos yes I agree but if your asking about one Christian living in the world we have today which has been influence by the idea of God and moral ideas associated with him that has been sustained by God the difference might not be so great.

The Christian criminals, in the adventure that they repent with actual repentance in the previous demise will honestly bypass to heaven. If a Christian believes that Christ died for his sins and again commits crimes, he's denying that Christ died for him or for his sins. Mere declaring a sinner's prayer does no longer keep each and each and every individual. Prayer ought to come from the middle, no longer basically in the lips. So, that is praying, no longer declaring the prayer. would God Bless you

You are looking at it wrong. Only humans put sin on a scale of one- ten One being lets say a white lie and ten being oh say rape and murder. GOd sees all sin, all crimes, and all transgrassions as the same. ALL sin is SIN. there is no way to live without sin, all have sinned all fall short. Jesus died for SIN. We must focus on asking for forgivenss throught HIS salvation.

There is coming a time shortly that the Spirit of God will be lifted from the earth and when it does all flesh left on earth will be filled with evil-spirits ( demons ). Now you use your imagination.......

Bitter much?

The Communists were atheists. They have killed over 100 million people. Since they want to eradicate all religion, shouldn't they have been better people?

NONE,because to even think of (lusting,or harming another person) in your heart is still as much a sin as doing the act. So No,we do not contemplate acts that are immoral, and if we do,we must repent for even thinking it.

haha wow. That's a rather grim question - you want me to give you (a total stranger) and the rest of the anonymous strangers here at Yahoo! Answers a glimpse into my twisted dark heart and my filthy mind? hah! I think I'll pass.

Suffice it to say I'm glad there is a God and that he guides me into paths of righteousness and light for his name's sake :)

Its not the religion that keeps us in check. Its the Person of Christ which lives in us. And if it wasn't for Him, I think many of us would be capable of appalling acts.

I Cr 13;8a

Relationship - Not religion.
