I have a friend who did it and there was no "experience," really... she received some correspondence here & there and then one day was invited for the interview... that's basically it.

I have South African friends who got in on the very first time. It all depends on how many people from your home country apply every year, and if your country is eligible for the lottery.

My best friend was lucky enough to win it! She received a letter in the mail saying to show up for an interview and medical tests at the american consulate and that was it!
