I do all my work myself as a amateur mech. I need to know whats going on here. My 1988 ford ranger 2.3 F.I is using twice the gas and is losing power.. Are the seals out or the timing off or what. Thanks for the help

Have you changed your air filter lately? Have you changed your plugs lately? Have you had a good tune up lately or tuned it and set the timing yourself. Have you run a compression check on the engine lately. Have you cleaned your Erg valve lately? Have you changed your fuel filter lately? Have you checked your timing belt lately>
And last but not least have you started buying your gas from a cut rate off brand station because you are getting cheap fuel?
Those are some of the things that can lower your gas mileage.

Make sure the thermost is working, engine mixture of gas runs on heat of water, the hotter the water the leaner the mixture, colder the water richer the mixture.

The only thing I can add is, how old is the Oxygen sensor? Is the CEL on? If not, run a scan test anyway.you may unearth something.

fuel filter. check for crap in the engine. clean your fuel injectors, or it may be cheaper to buy new ones. go to Napa and buy a fuel injector cleaner that you put in your gas tank
