I have thick, wavy, healthy hair midway down my back. Do I have to follow the rules of my mother and grandmother? Is it time for a closer crop? I want a professional appearance. Is my hair either aging me or, just simply out-of-place? Or, in this day and age, can I keep it?

Don't you dare cut your hair because of peer pressure from your family. If you still like your hair and you keep it up, then no problem. These are not the same times as your mother and women keep there long hair for as long as they want. Look at all your older actresses, they have long hair. It is all in who you are and how you feel. Good Luck

I am your age and am sick of hearing how once women hit their 40's they should cut their hair. There is no rule or law regarding hair length. Haven't you ever seen an old, old lady with gray hair that is in a big ole braid all the way down her back. Someone gonna tell granny that she needs to cut her braid off? NOT ME! LOL
Wear your hair however you feel comfortable and pretty. The only thing I will mention and this is only my opinion...you said you want a professional appearance. My first thought was ... professional as in the business world...and to me (again my opinion only) I think of business professional as being a shoulder length or shorter, manicured hair style. When I say manicured I mean not the messy look (messy bun, short spikey hair, etc)
But then I thought...well heck, there are a lot of professions out there and not all of them would mean a shorter, more groomed look. That's what I mean instead of manicured, lol, a more well groomed look. Phew, that made my head hurt.
Ok so as I was saying, about the professional look...business professional...you tend to want a more classy, serious look as opposed to the long hair without really a style other than just being long...which to me portrays "fun" "youthfulness" "carefree" etc. not really serious and i don't mean that in a bad way.
But, you can still appear as professional with long hair. Just mess with it or go to your hair stylist and have them play around with it and find a few different styles. It will probably consist of some type of up do's...not like formal up-do's...
As we get older our body parts tend to head south, including our faces. Long hair on someone with a long, narrow face will draw their face down even more. Not everyone can wear every hair style, that's just a fact. It depends on your facial structure, your body type, etc. Like myself..I have a high forehead therefore I wear wispy, side-swept bangs to camoflauge it a little bit. I cut my long hair when I turned 40. Not because of any so-called rules or pressure from anyone..but because I NEEDED a change. I was terrified and didn't look until i was completely done. I was in shock and wasn't sure if i liked it or not. I knew I didn't hate it, I just hadn't seen myself with shorter hair in so long. When family & friends first saw my hair the first word out of 99% of their mouths was..."classy." I didn't ask for a classy haircut, I don't think I even got a classy haircut..my hair is just layered all over, shoulder length in the back, angled by my face...the same haircut millions of other women have. I guess it just worked for me..I don't know. It looks good when I'm dressed up and looks just as good when I'm wearing jeans..so I don't know. I think it's because I actually have a style now..LOL But hey, I'll take "classy" any day of the week.
But it all boils down to what YOU like and how YOU feel with your hair. Now-a-days...anything goes. We are not our mothers and grandmothers and our girls are even bolder than we were! Yay...good for them!! (I should know, I have two of them lol)

Just do what you feel comfortable with. Are you tired of taking care of your long hair? If you do cut it shorter it will be even wavier because they weight of the hair will be gone. Or even curly. Good Luck
