I have very sensitive eyes and cutting onions can be extremely irritating. Any tricks would be greatly appreciated.

Using a knife, cut a cone out of the bottom of the onion (where the roots come out). The diameter of this cone should be about a third of the diameter of the onion, and about 1/3 deep. Take this piece and throw it away (don't put it down the disposal!). This piece contains the part/gland that makes baby Jesus and everyone else in the room cry when you're chopping it up. Once you've gotten that piece out, chop off the top, peel, and slice the onion.

I know this may sound lazy but I have been buying the pre-cut up onions in the produce section. You can get reg onions, green onions or a mixed blend. only problem is that when you open them, they're only good for a couple of days. Or you can get em in the freezer section. The way I've heard to cut down on the tears is to rinse the onion well in cold water. Or buy one of those quick choppers you see in TV..

Yes! If you cut the ends off and put them in water for a few minutes then try to cut them and it should help. Also depends on the onion, some are sooo strong that may not work.

What works best for me is to put the onion in the freezer for 10minutes to chill. When it's time to chop - do it by a sink with the tap running.

Also, if you want to get rid of the smell from your hands, squeeze some washing up liquid into your hands then use a steel "bar of soap" or just rub your hands on the metal bit of the tap/faucet. The metal will get rid of the smell! :-)

I have the same problem& I work in a kitchen. Here it is, when onions spray it causes a reaction with your eyes producing sulfer whiich is what irratates. To help them not spray, make sure they are cold, cut with a very sharp unserrated knife, and whistle or sing (this helps from inhaling the fumes), the older the onions the worse it is. However my best advise is to get someone else to do it!

Cut them in a large bowl or sink of cold water, holding the onion submerged in water.

THIS REALLY WORKS! Take a sip of water but hold it in your mouth while you cut the onion and don't swallow it until you're finished.

Try using a sharper knife so u wont crush the onion if ur using a dull knife. Put a fragrant candle next to you so you wont smell the onion
