Would definitely agree with chancelik and tuberoot -- a lamb is great as it had been referred in so many of Jesus' parables. Also, it will remind her of the wonderful moral value of gracious humility that Jesus often taught. And it will also remind her that Jesus chose to be born in a humble manger, and not in some luxurious and fanciful mansion..

I saw a child with a long flat box (about 3' long and about 1 1/2 foot thick) painted to resemble a Bible and a ribbon out the top & bottom to resemble a place marker. She got first prize.

A lamb. As in the passover lamb. You know, wooly and without blemish. If you wanted to, you could dress up like a shepherd.

What I finally did was look up sites, that feature Jewish clothing for girls. I then made a pattern, by looking at one of the dresses; that is pictured on the website. Just add a headscarf and you have a little Mary - Mother of Jesus, Ruth, or Esther.

Get a plain nightgown and a couple of large scarfs and dress her as a woman of the time. She can say she's Mary Magdalene.
Ooo, she can hold a piece of cloth with a man's bearded face on it, like Saint Veronica!

Whatever character you decide, do NOT buy your costume. If you want authenticity, it needs to look home-made (and the effect will probably be greater if your skills as a seamstress aren't what they could be). :)

An angel. Most costume shops should have this. Wal-Mart would at Halloween time.

Everyone should dress as sheep. You're lambs of god and the lard is your sheppard.
Or maybe you could dress her as a wretch? Amazing Grace remember?
