Investigators have revealed that, immediately before the fatal flight, the aircraft had performed a Tunis-Bari service and landed at Bari in Italy with just 305kg of fuel in total – a level which should have triggered a low-fuel alert to the crew. But the gauge incorrectly indicated that the ATR72’s tanks contained 2,300kg. This was because the ATR72’s fuel warning system depended on the information from the fuel-quantity indicator, an indicator which was reading incorrectly because it was designed to be fitted only in a smaller plane: the ATR42. The aircraft subsequently took on just 265kg of fuel at Bari, departing for Djerba with only 570kg in total, but which showed as 2,700kg to the crew. During the flight, no low fuel warning has triggered, due to the wrong indicator. The turboprop suffered fuel exhaustion and the ATR72 ditched off the Sicilian coast. Among the 39 (passengers:34 crew:5) onboard, 14 were killed, including 2 crew.

Hi Hassen, good morning every body ..
Yes I did the day before yesterday, one of my son's friend send it to us like a scoop.(recorded from Daily Motion )
we viewed it once,it was a very sad event, and of course I knew about the crash since Aug.2005.
I received your message to mention it for me but I couldn't view it again because I'm very sensitive and know their where 12 passengers + 2 crew( including Mr Chokri) whose voice talking to the captain is audible so is the discussion between the pilot/the copilot and the air traffic controller.
May God bless all the dead and the lost passengers.and give his rewards to the technical crew because they where very skilled and they succeeded to make their best to have the minimum damage to the passengers.
My congratulations to the Pilot/co-Pilot. and to all of the Tunisian Pilots because I know some of them (being a former Air traffic teacher) and they are Great.
Hopefully we did not have serious accident or crash among the national or Private fleet since the creation of the Tunisian Civil Aviation just after the Independence.I would like to know more about the history of the Tunisian Aviation a very good book written by one of my friend Habib Soussia,it's available in English, and french.

I had never heard of this incident or this problem with the ATR-72s. I am glad to know about it. I remember 10-15 years ago, ATRs were removed from service in the northern US because of icing problems that caused a crash in Illinois. Are ATRs "star-crossed" aircraft? Or just poorly designed and/or built?

its very sad, but planes crash all the time. I thought it was going to be something cool like: getting hit my a missile, UFO collided with it, or anything else. What would you act like if you knew you had seconds to live?

PS, black boxes are leaked all the time, nothing new
