The best way to learn any language is through total immersion training, but that probably isn't an option for you, for one reason or another. Chinese is one of the hardest languages to learn, but so is English and you seem to have a handle on that, more or less ;)

The easiest way to get started is to check with your local community college and see if they offer a course in it, then try it out.

which dialect do you want to learn? There are many chinese dialects spoken all over asia. People say, that Mandarin is the language of the educated, (i have to disagree..)

to learn chinese, you first need to look for someone who speaks the language and practice with that person, if possible, everyday... Yes, it is quite difficult, but there is nothing impossible if you just put your mind to it.

speaking is easier than writing and reading chinese characters. But if you learn how to write using chinese characters, that would be great because the characters are the same no matter what dialect you speak.... for example, "I Love You" is written the same way whether you are mandarin, or fookien... it is just read differently.

You can and probably should go to a school to start. Chinese is a very difficult language to learn..and you really need a native speaker to help you. Most of the sounds alone are not the exact equivalent of english letters. I've been studying for about 5 years and I still go to school.

There are over 7 thousand characters and the dialect is hard to master. Good Luck.
