Based on my personal experience, the fastest peer-to-peer setup that I've used has been BitTorrent.
When used on a fat-band (100mbit internet), I saw _sustained_ speed of 8mb/s (that is megabytes, not megabits). Of course, this was on a very popular torrent file that had around 500 seeders and over 1000 leeches.
As far as P2P that is a true P2P (e.g. search from the client, no use of the web for torrent files, etc.) I had a preference for Gnutella clients (i.e. LimeWire, BearShare, etc.) though the Gnutella protocol is horribly inefficient as I understand.

It has little to do with who is fastest! One server might be faster for some than it is for someone else! You also need to keep in mind how far from the server you are, how far away the person is that you are downloading from, time of day, how fast their and your connection is, etc! To begin with, only people who dont know what the consequences of downloading from total strangers using P2P! People who are aware and have some internet intelligence dont use them!

I like BitTorrent, and the best client for that in my opinion is Azureus. But I also use Limewire, which is a pretty good program if you don't feel like messing around with the generally complicated BitTorrent system.

you are able to also use BitLord. Its impressive and easy to apply, except for the quest also returns you fairly suitable consequences. with regard to the speed, it easily relies upon on the type of seeders and your internet connection. I actually have a 256kbps connection and that i clocked speeds of two hundred kbps on BitLord with sufficient type of seeders. And placing the probabilities to 1mbps does no longer help you.
