Shift keying is a term for the modulation of a carrier into two states. It comes from the use of telegraph keys to send messages. The carrier is in one state with the key open, and "shifts" to a second state when the key is pressed. The term has become generalized to refer to any two-state modulation. The different forms of keying are based on what property of the carrier is changed when the state is changed;

ASK: the amplitude changes
FSK: the frequency changes
PSK: the phase changes.
