He sleeps in the hall outside our bedroom but became so distraught he scratched on the door and wanted to climb under the bed and seemed terrified. We checked the hall and everything seems okay. There was no outside noise and it is not the smoke detector beeping or mobile phone which we know do cause problems to him. What is causing this problem? Is he getting dog dementia?

It could be dementia or it could be your older dog is starting to lose his senses. His hearing and eye sight could be diminishing and he is afraid he is vulnerable. Its a very basic survival instinct for a dog to be on guard. He may know he is unable to do this anymore and is looking for you as his pack to protect him. Just a theory but, I have seen elderly dogs do this before.

Possibly could be just his old age affecting him. Poor thing. But also remember, animals have a keener sense than humans. Perhaps he heard something outside that frightened him, or saw something move. If you can, keep him in your bedroom for just one night and see how he reacts. Perhaps he's just lonesome.

It could be doggie senility setting in, or something as simple as his eyesight is going and he can't see as well at night, which is causing him to panic?

You need to get him checked out by a Vet.

its a canine form of alshheimers, they suffer too just like humans, leave the door open for several nights, and keep reasuring the dog that he will be alright, your problem should correct it self in time. good luck
