As it's Saturday here is a little puzzle of the younger ones..........

A man, with a basket full of eggs, approches a farmer's gate and asks if he can pass through. The farmer says yes he can but in payment the farmer wants half of all the eggs in the basket plus half an egg. The man says OK, pays in eggs, and goes through.

He then approches a second gate with a second farmer who, once again asks for half of all the eggs in the basket plus half an egg. The man says OK, pays in eggs, and goes through.

He then approches a third gate and a third farmer who once more askes for half of all the eggs in the basket plus half an egg. The man say OK, pays in eggs, and goes through.

However, when gets to the other side he looks in his basket, only to find he has no eggs left.

How many did he have to start with?

Seven, unless there's a silly trick to it.

You never split an egg in this, so the concept of a "half an egg" remains just a concept. You start out with seven. You pay "half of the eggs plus half an egg", which is 3.5 + 0.5 = 4. You have three remaining.

You pass through another gate, and you pay 1.5 + 0.5 = 2. You have one egg remaining.

You pass through the last gate and pay "half the eggs plus half an egg". You only have one egg, so half the eggs plus half an egg is your only remaining egg.
