Let me get this straight....
Lots of people say the LDS church is a cult correct?
A Cult is basically a church that is widely beleived to be false right?
Well Did you know the church has over 12 million members?
I dont think it can be "widely" false if it has a lot of members...
What is your definition of cult?

"They have just over 6 million members not 12 and half of them are what is call Jack Mormons which means they were baptized into it but don't practice it. They practice polygamy, they practice baptism for the dead, they practice blood atonement, they practice much worse rituals in their temple and they outright practice theocratic communism. Just because they have a lot of members doesn't mean that they are not a cult it just means a lot of people have the same kind of mentality. Try reading Kingdom of the Cults by Dr. Walter Martin. Even better try living life behind the Zion curtain and not being one of them."
Response: Actually they do have over 12 million, as ov the year 2000. I am a mormon and ther is no way to count "jack" mormons.
All the information regarding the LDS church can be found at mormon.org and lds.org none of those other bogus sites that give false information...
Also, you cant say a belief is false because it is a belief and cant be proved.

"Whether you call it a cult or not , the Book of Mormon has been changed more than 40 times ...... do you think that a perfect God would change his mind ?"
It must change over time to deal with how we read and understand. It has to be changed to be acustomed to our understanding...
BTW: Where is the proof that you know of the book of mormon chnages?
I dont think there is an official saying so how do you know its true?(I am not aware of it changing but heard of ti)

"Mormons believe in a plurality of gods (in actuallity that after entering into the celestial kingdom that they can become gods themselves.)"
I dont believe they become gods themselves physically but gods in the eyes of god because we strive to be like him and jesus christ. And if we are successful to reaching the celestial kingdom we are godlike because we have achieved the highest possible...

QT, I like what you have been saying.
It isn't required but its just a common thing to say.
You don't even have to talk if you don't want to.
There is only one true church, maybe its the LDS church maybe its not.
There are multiple christian churches and only one can be the same..
Even if the LDS church is false, I dont not believe any other churches to be true, the LDS is the only church I believe to be true moreso than any other because none that I know were started by a prophet.
Catholic church started a few hundred years after christ died, there were no living prophets when christ died and no1 to keep his church alive. We believe the foundation of his church was destroyed therefore no church could have a 100% true chuch. LDS believe that other chuches may have truth in it but not 100%.
All other christian churches started by someone putting it together with what they believed to be right, but they are missing bits and pieces.
I am telling you this from what I think is true.

Inactive and not believing in the church anymore are two separate things. Inactive members may still be contacted by the church, such as through home teaching, or they may go to church once a month or even less than that. They are just lazy... People that join the church and dont resign, that is their fault. I bet it would only be 1% - 5 % at the most.we still have millions of members, over 10 million.

bxixxv - first of all im not saying anything about truths, im saying the general definition of a cult is a group that is believed to have false beliefs. This shouldnt be so since the lds church has millions of followers. Maybe if the church has 100,000 followers then maybe...
Also, I doubt the catholic church has 1 billion followers, thats 1/6 of the world. There are only like 6 billion people in the world. I dont think there are hundreds of billions in asia (since its the highest population)

What does the number of members have to do with the mormon church not being a cult?
Matt 24:11 And many false prophets shall rise, and shall deceive many.
And yes! there may be miracles happening within the mormon church but -
Matt 24:24 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall show great signs and wonders; insomuch that, if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect.
BTW - according to an article in the Salt Lake Tribune( article updated 6-06) - the mormon church is having difficulty keeping their members and membership is dropping! - http://www.sltrib.com/ci_2890645
My definition of a cult is - a religion that follows a leader who brainwashes their members into thinking they are the only true church.
And yes I feel mormons are brainwashed into thinking they are the only true church. When they give a testimony they always say "I believe the church is true". "I believe the book of mormon is true". They teach there children at a young age to give this testimony in front of the church!
read this testimony - http://www.angelfire.com/tn3/ldsyouthsite/test.html
When a Christian gives a testimony - we testify as to how God is working in our lives - we don't claim (well most of us don't, I'm sure there are some that do) that any one christian denomination it the only true denomination. When I give a testimony I don't say "I believe the Assemblies of God is the one true church.
God bless you

You should look up Mormonism on the net. I did because I knew someone that was Mormon and wanted to understand more about what they believe.I had no idea what I would find and had no expectations either for or against Mormonism.
One thing I found ( among many ) was a letter of resignation from a long standing member respectfully appealing to others in higher positions to take a good look at many discrepancies he had found buried in the church records.
Something I've heard about the Mormon church is that they are well known for documenting everything but the information is not readily available to the general congregation so most people don't know unless they feel there is something amiss and start digging.
Whether you call it a cult or not , the Book of Mormon has been changed more than 40 times ...... do you think that a perfect God would change his mind ?
Just food for thought : )

This is without a doubt the stupidest argument for the "truth" of a religion.
You're saying that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints can't be a cult and must be right because they have 12 million members.
With this kind of logic, then you just helped me prove my religion the true church.
The Roman Catholic church must be the true church because it has 1 billion members! You know, our 1 billion people are a lot more than your guys' 12 million.
How can 1 billion Catholics be wrong!?
Silly!

What does the number of members have to do if its a "cult" or not? Jesus said "broad" is the way that leads to destruction, and "narrow" is the way that leads to life. There are always going to be MORE false believers than real ones. A "christian cult" is a group that either denies one or more of the essential doctrines of the Faith or a group that is gathered around ONE persons interpetation of scripture. The LDS qualifys on both counts. If YOU do not know what the ESSENTIAL doctrines are to be a real christian, then YOU need to check your "spiritual birthday". Just asking the question says you are either a mormon trying to hide the fact, or a very ill-informed christian, or just a person who just thinks they are a christian but is only a religious person and a member of the "broad" way......theBerean

A cult is a religious organization with a false belief. The LDS church had "prophets" that gave false prophecy and still are followed or had their prophecies changed. They also have a "history" that has no archaeological backing. It even mentions animals in South America that have never existed there. There are so many problems with the Mormon beliefs, though the people are very nice. The Bible says, "Let God be true and every man a liar" so the number of people who believe in something doesn't make it true.

Actually the dictionary definition of cult that I found was this:
"A group bound together by veneration of the same thing, person, ideal, etc."
Nothing to do with a church believed to be false.
I think youre thinking of the word "sect", which is defined as:
"A group regarded as heretical or as deviating from a generally accepted religious tradition."
Secondly, "widely believed to be false" means many people dont believe in it. As far as Im aware, there is an overwhelming majority of people on this earth who dont believe in the Church of LDS, thereby making it widely believed to be false.
Just what point exactly are you trying to make?

12 million members, I don't think so. You gotta know that, that's counting all the inactive members of the church, too. If you're baptized one month and stop going to the church the next your name is still on the church records. That is why it's so important for people who leave the LDS church to have their names removed. I've been told that they will leave your name on their records until you are 110. Go figure.

If in doubt about your religion and it's teachings, ask your pastor, ministers and such to give you the scripture out of the Bible. Make sure it is the Holy Bible (KJV) 1611. If they cannot back anything up with scripture, then I would be worried. This is why it is important to read your Bible so that you know if something wrong is being taught to you. I was raised a catholic. I later learned that alot of what they teach is not in the Bible anywhere, such as praying to Mary and saints, and such. Also praying to a rosary is nowhere in the Bible, and neither is bowing to statues. In fact in the Bible it warns us not to bow to statues or to any man. Yes, many catholics deny this, but I know it to be true because I was there. I am now a born again Christian and only follow the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Any false religion will take you straight to hell. Just read it on this website. Once you get on the page, click on "false religion" and go from there.

Quite frankly, the religious ideas and practices within the LDS church, to say the least, do not line up with mainstream christian thought.
Mormons believe in a plurality of gods (in actuallity that after entering into the celestial kingdom that they can become gods themselves.)
They believe that Jesus and God the Father are two seperate entities (where as mainstream christianity says they are different personas of one being.)
Mormons believe that in order for a woman to enter heaven that a man must call her name upon his entering into the celestial kingdom (basically, women can't enter the highest level of heaven without a man.)
Humans will, if they do not fully uphold mormon morality, become angels (christian churches do not hold that belief.)
Mormons believe in baptism of the dead.
Mormons believe that 'as god once was, so we are, and as God is, so can we become.' Meaning that God was once a human.
Many mormons believe that Adam (of Adam and Eve) was that human.
these things just DON'T line up with mainstream christianity, and exclude it from main structure of being a christian church.
In other words, Mormons are NOT christians. I am sorry to say that, but that is what christians outside of the LDS church hold too.
