It depends on the degree of their impairment.

Many with mild to moderate mental problems work a normal schedule with normal pay, just like everyone else.

Some with more severe impairments do draw disability benefits and perform what is called "sheltered work". This is where the employer makes special arrangements for the disabled individual.

Others are not able to work at all and only draw disability benefits.

Any person on disability may chose to have a trial work peroid, this allows them to attempt to work again while keeping their benefits. There are guidelines for this as well.

It depends on whether or not they can work and hold down a steady job as to whether or not they can get disability. Of course if they do work they get a normal salary, that's discrimination if they don't, and of course you know lawyers just jump on the discrimination thing these days. As for getting disabililty, you have to file with Social Security and go through that process which is a really long pain in the ***. I can guarantee that you will get denied two times and have a hearing, because mental illness causing job loss is a hard thing to prove. You will see tons of doctors, take tons of tests, etc. At the hearing, you will most definitely want to have a lawyer that deals with disability/social security cases. Then, you will be represented, there will be a judge, and there will be someone else in there that will be trying to determine what if any kind of job you should be able to have. If it is determined that there are no jobs that you will be able to keep to provide a lively hold for yourself, then you will more than likely be approved for disability. That's pretty much how it works. That's how I had to do it, but it took me three and a half years. In that time though, I went through 27 jobs. I think it probably varies from person to person.

Some people with a mental disability can and do work. It depends on what type of mental illness you're referring to. If a person has, let's say, depression or attention deficit disorder they can work at almost any job if their symptoms are controlled through medication and/or therapy. If a person is suicidal or psychotic and medication/therapy does nothing to help then no, they can't work. I'm not sure which mental illness you'd have to have in order to qualify for disability benefits. It would all depend on if your Doctor has placed you on disability because he/she thought you were not capable of working in any capacity due to your mental illness. As far as salary, it depend on where they work! If a person has slight mental retardation, they could work at Goodwill. But they could also bag groceries at a super market and make more money. A person with a mental illness would probably do well to contact a state agency that places the mentally ill in suitable jobs and in many cases will also provide training in order to get the job. Hope this answers your questions.

It is contingent upon the type and severity of the problem or disorder and usually before "assistance" is provided an individual has to go through a screening process whereby a diagnosis of the situation is given and recommendations made to the appropriate agencies.....

There are numerous positions that can and are being filled by persons diagnosed with many types of mental problems and disorders---often these folks are extremely good at the tasks they are given once the appropriate performance level is matched to an appropriate job---employers of such individuals regularly report on the amazing personal dedication and attention to detail that these individuals put into their efforts !!

However, there are those that simply can not perform in a work situation and these people are the ones that have to be placed in care facilities or on some form of subsistence program for them to be able to make a life with some stability and dignity intact !!

And, there are laws in place that see to it that these people are not used unjustly or unfairly in what is paid to them for the jobs that they do--- I know of two programs that subsidize what some employers pay these people so that they get a decent and livable wage while giving the employer a solid break in his bottom line output for being a resource for these people's integration into the workforce !!

I am going to guess that you mean mentally disabled rather than mentally ill. Yes, they do work. It really depends on the severity of their disability. Many live in group homes or apartments with assistance and live and work like everyone else. Most are entitled to care and support (at least for a certain amount of time after they reach adulthood) under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act.

Depends on what the mental problems are. And, the type of job. One might qualify for disability benefits-please check with your dr and social security on this. Take care.

lots of people who see their doctors and take medication if necessary work. they are and should be treated equally, and get the same pay. i am talking about people that are mentally ill, not mentally challenged. mentally challenged people, do get a disability, and some have jobs that are tailored to their degree of functioning. a person gets a disability pension, based on , if they are able to work or not, not based on the illness. hope this helps

I got problems...and i work for food.
Usually they are paid accordingly. If special help is necessary it is usually provided. More specific info would be needed and a social worker could answer this better

I think it depends on what type of disorder you have and also the occupation you choose. For example, someone with bipolar disorder could get into telemarketing.
