Linux is operating system just like Windows or Mac OS.
Every operating system has is plus or minus. The plus with Linux is its free software then operates thousands of free programs. The drawback is its not the most commonly used operating system.
as for XGL and the other cool effects available now on a Linux desktop it will depend on the distribution( flavor ) that is installed. In most cases when buying a new computer any responsible supplier to provide the most up-to-date operating system available. In all cases since XGL is important to you, best thing to do is ask before you buy a computer.

Actually windows is a version of Linux in a very long story starting back in 1969 with Unix. But, Bill Gates not want us to go down that road. LOL!
But, it an OS like windows and it can work on many computers. You download Linux and burn to a CD and it loads as a live CD which you can run Linux to see how it work with your computer. If, it work OK then you can install as a dual-boot with windows. This put Linux in a separate partition from window and when you boot you given the choice which OS you want to boot too. Later if you get good with Linux you may want to remove windows and install only Linux. Most people keep windows for some games and use Linux for everything else.

It's an 'operating system'. Linux can replace windows. It's not made by Microsoft. It's developed independently, by volunteers AND private companies. It's free, although some versions of it costs because they have been extended and improved by prvate companies. It provides everything Windows does (graphical environment, multi-tasking, etc.), but you can't run Windows programs in it, unless you buy some special software that acts as a kind of translator. There is scads of Linux application software out there though.

Its an Operating system other than Windows. Has a lot of nice features and all but is not compatible with a lot neither. If you know how to use Windows then stick with it.

For those new to LINUX, the best distribution is UBUNTU.
If your computer has 256MB of RAM get a full version. If less get XUBUNTU.
