My puppy and I are working on housebreaking, and so far it's going fairly well. I think. I've never had a puppy, so I don't know, but anyways...

I have puppy pads laid out in my room because it's way too cold out for me to be confortable taking a puppy with thin-ish fur outside to "go" and it takes too long to get a sweater on her. She seems to like the sweater and cooperates when I do put it on her. She even gets "mad" at me when I take it off. She knows that when she does something right she gets a treat, and she's figured out she only gets it when I'm paying attention, so when she has to potty at night she'll go over to the pad, check if I'm watching and bark to get my attention. Then she'll go. If she gets up at night and goes, she'll wake me up afterwards to gain her reward. It's the funniest thing.

And don't reprimand me for not crate training. I don't think it's cruel, I just don't have the heart to listen to her whine.

that's cool. she's trained you. j/k.

congrats on training her to go on the pads. my dog misses the pad on purpose..so we always take him outside. he actually knows how to use the doggy door. so that's so much better. he knows to go and come right back in.

congrats in training her.

Congrats with the pad training. My dog missed a few times also. You might want to keep in mind that more than 1 pad isn't a good idea. As a puppy, she sees the area and she knows to go on that spot. You should drag the pad closer to the door as time goes on. If you have more than 1 pad it will confuse her on where she needs to go. As for the crate training, I trained my shih tzu in a crate and she still uses it. (she's 1 1/2 yrs old)

Good Luck.

I have a 15 month old chihuahua that we have litter box trained. He also did the same thing. It is totally normal. He/she is proud of themselves for doing right and knowing that if they do good they get a special treat. His breeder trains the puppies from birth to use a litter box and then the new owners have a choice whether to stick with it or not and we chose to but he was stubborn and wanted treats everytime he went and if you didn't he'd go and fling the poop out onto the floor and bark at it so you'd look or he'd bark until you looked at him and then go right outside the box and run and hide. I don't know how old your puppy is but I would suggest that at 7-8 months old start weening him/her off of a treat everytime and treat with either a little bit of their own food or with physical and vocal treats. Make sure you don't let them see you taking their "treat" out of their food bag though. hahahaha They catch on quick!!!
