I'm assuming most answers will say "to backpack," but I'm wanting tips on how to get around, where to stay, what to do for fun, etc...I want to take a month-long trip for very, very cheap. Thanks for your ideas!

How cheap?

I went to Europe and the UK and did it fairly cheaply last year, and no not backpacking. in terms of accom, we did stay in 1 backpackers where we had all our own amenities other than that we stayed in hotels. id advise you to plan this well in advance so that you have a clear understanding of all your costs and have more time to compare.
most public transport is fairly cheap, try to negotiate your taxi fares in advance and dont be afraid to say "NO" to a tip if they try to rip you off. flights are cheap as chips and trains are just as good. we upgraded to first class from Prague to Munich for $2 in Prague.
food will be your biggest expense, try to get a hotel that does breakfast so you can fill up and pinch things for later, especially in Italy where its all so tempting. oh and dont eat smack bang in touristy areas (exept for the crepe vans under the eiffel tower yummo) rather go a street or 2 away and the food is cheaper and nicer. and in italy eat at trattorias, not ristaurants!
dont buy any souvineers or books ect and try to keep your luggage weight down so you dont have to pay extra. lots of citys offer free attractions and entry (like to museams) ask at the hotel for all this info.

good luck and have fun!

Use public transportation, stay in hostels (you might not like sleeping in a barracks type of place or sharing a room with ppl you don't know). An alternative is staying in a bed & breakfast or a hotel room with no private bath (bathroom down the hall just like in some college dorms). Most tourist offices have lists of hotels incl. the cheaper ones. Get a list before you leave for Europe. You can also save $ by not eating in restaurants and I'm not being sarcastic. Some tourists insist on eating out every meal and this is really expensive. You can get great pastries from bakeries and groceries that would be found only in the gourmet section in the US/Canada in Europe for a reasonable price. DIY is definitely a great way to save $. Tour packages tend to pick more expensive hotels for 2 reasons--they need to find a larger bldg which usually means a more expensive hotel bc they want the whole group to stay in the same hotel. Also, they do not want ppl to complain about a cheaper hotel that has a shared bath and no cable tv.

save early on your air fare to Europe, and don't be too in touch approximately which city you land in. Public delivery on the Continent and the united kingdom is amazingly sturdy. in case you're actually not in a hurry, look into diverse shipment ships for crusing over. maximum retailers have 6 to eight cabins which they make accessible for enable, and the accomodations would be extremely staggering. Pool. sturdy nutrition. No entertainment, so deliver some books or CD/DVD. the charges common much less consistent with day than you will customarily spend on accommodations and nutrients at only approximately any sturdy hotel. attempt to locate accommodations no longer in, yet on the component of, your trip spot cities. someplace a nil.5 hour or so away by ability of practice. truthfully plan on ingesting out somewhat, yet attempt to feed your self out of the markets as much as achievable. lease bicycles. there is a minimum of one business enterprise that provides unique apartment leases for the two short and long term maintains to be. look into the information superhighway.

you use to be able to take the train cheaper than most ways of travel right accross borders etc, but that was so many years ago i dont even know if its still a viable means of transportation there. or what happens at borders after the aftershock of 9-11 spread around the world.
