My ears heard "Salmonella bacteria, Peter Pan Peanut Butter, and some kind sold at WalMart, that has lot number 2111 or those numbers as part of the numbers imprinted on the top of the plastic lid."

As for details, about 300 people in several states affected.

This is a newbie for peanut butter as far as I know. Probably improperly cleaned processing equipment or contaminated ingredients other than peanuts.

For example, rapeseed oil or molasses might have been transported in a bulk carrier that was used for something else and not cleaned properly, or one that was just not cleaned properly after each use.

Or the molasses (etc.) itself could have been contaminated, or the sugar.

Or was it a case of sabotage during the making of the peanut butter.....dum de dump dump...

Apparently they are pretty sure it is the peanut butter listed.

Salmonella much associated with chickens &c......

It is salmonella, not E.Coli. The story goes like this... One manufacturing plant is to blame. That plant manufactures Peter Pan and Great Value (Walmart brand) peanut butter. If the lid of your peanut butter has the first four digits 2111, take the container to Walmart and they will refund your money. This issue goes back to at least August, so if you have one of the above named brands with the code 2111, toss it or get your money back. If you type "peanut butter recall" into your search browser, you will have a wealth of information.

well, actually there are 2 brands, Peter Pan and also Great Value (which is a Wal-Mart brand) they are both manufactured by the same company, which I want to say is Con-Agra. In the state of Virginia, 17 people have gotten sick from eating the contaminated peanut butter, no fatalities. And also, it is not e-coli that has been traced in the peanut butter, it is salmonella.

the brand that they're recalling is peter-pan...but even then you don't have to be worried unless the serial # on the lid begins with a "2111"...ours did and we had to toss it. :(
