bear with me, this is my first question ever and i feel kind of silly asking it at all.

i used to be able to dye my hair red and it would actually stay that way, but i find that the newer red dyes fade out super fast. i've heard of this happening to other people too, so i'm fairly certain it's not just something to do with my hair.

so, does anyone know why red dyes that are supposed to be permanent have a tendency to wash out or fade quickly?

thanks for the help!

I don't know why it fades, my hair dresser told me once but I've forgotten. Something to do with the pH. Anyways, my boyfriend dyes his hair all kinds of bright colors and he's figured out a way to keep it from fading for a bit.
1. Crush some tablets of aspirin
2. Put the crushed aspirin in your shampoo bottle
3. Shake the bottle so it is evenly distributed
4. Wash hair using cool water instead of hot

*Addition:
Ok, I just asked my roommate and she says the red molecule is the largest and therefore the hardest to get into the hair shaft. It will normally not be absorbed as deep and therefore will fade off quickly.

It's actually a good question. There is something in the dye when you dye your hair red that it just doesn't hold. If you dye it with a red that is on the orange side of a red the red will turn to a sort of blondish sort of red, the reason, who knows, it's just like natural red hair which is hard to keep for some reason. My mother hard natural red hair and it was hard to keep at real natural red, I dye my hair red and it shifts colors. If I use a hue that is more in the blue range, it tends to turn more to a brunette tone. Unlike any other hair dye, it is just fragile and you have to keep out of the sun and out of chlorine and use special shampoos, and I can't really answer your question but to say, it's a good question, and as long as you or anyone, like me uses red, it will keep fading and keep people like my hair dresser vert happy. Guess that's why I like having a wig to fool around with at times, at least it stays red!

The red colour molecules in the hair are the largest, and therefore the hardest to remove from the hair when lightening and harder to deposit into the shaft when changing the tone of your hair. My experience is that Redken Color Gels have minimal fade compared to most other colours. You'll have to go to a Redken salon to have it done though

I don't know if they do but I do know that you can by color fade block shampoo and conditioner and it'll lock in the color...I believe tresseme makes it. Good luck to you!
